Anyone use Early Intervention?

Pedi is concerned about a developmental delay because Jack is not tracking with his eyes. He is 10 weeks.

I'm just curious what they do during a visit.

Re: Anyone use Early Intervention?

  • LO was in early intervention since he was about 3 mo. old. He had hearing loss which has since improved/fixed itself, so we were recently discharged from the program. We were originally with Philadelphia County and then recently moved to Montgomery. What will happen is they'll send a service coordinator and/or person to evaluate Jack...they'll ask you a lot of questions and observe him. Our evaluations took about an hour. Then, based on the eval, they decide how often you'll get services. Keep in mind, if you do need services and you're not 100% happy with it, speak up. We weren't happy with our first service coordinator (the person who arranges meetings, etc.) and we asked for a different one. Good luck!

  • is it the elwyn institute?  if so, i tool keira for an eval right after she turned 3.  she was stuttering really bad.  i was VERY freaked out by it.  their report stated that it was not serious enough to be covered, to let it go for 6 months and come back.  it continued to get worse...i continued to be more of a wreck...and it disappeared =)  it was very upsetting for me to go there and see kids that were in bad shape...so be prepared.  good luck...i hope you have a good experience.  hang in there =)

  • im sorry, i thought he was older.  good luck.  do your research but don't read into the internet too much, it can make you a basketcase.  maybe try the bump, and see if someone else has dealt with a similar situation.

  • I don't have any insight, I just wanted to say I am sorry you have to deal with this.  I hope it turns out to be nothing

I know you don't really dig TB, so I would be glad to ask on the SAHM board if you don't get any helpful responses

Thanks, I'm hoping it's nothing.  I'm concerned, but not going to really worry about it until he is evaluated.  He did pass his intial hearing and vision tests so that's a plus.

Ha! Yes, I am definitely more of a lurker on TB.  I might post on the 0-3 board to see if anyone has had a similar issue.

  • I'll add that we always had people come to our house for meetings/evaluations...we never went anywhere. When they asked me questions, I often felt bad b/c I didn't know the answers --- they would ask me if LO does something specific and I would have no clue. For example: "Does LO point to the dog if he sees a dog in a book?" and "how many blocks can he stack?" --- I felt like a bad mom b/c I had no idea if he could do some of the things they were asking. One person later told me it's normal not to have the answers to every question. So if that happens to you, don't feel bad!

  • Ugh, JenD, I am sorry you have to stress out about this.  I am a psycho baby symptom googler, so I would say stay off the internet first and foremost.

I'd follow your gut, and if you trust your pefi, follow his/her lead.

  • ESyn - yes, they did say someone would come out to our house to evaluate.

Did you have to wait long for them to come out?  When I called this morning, they said it could be up to two weeks before I hear from the actual group that will evalute him.

I think it was at least a few weeks...the staff at the Philly office were so stretched thin and so busy that it took a while for them to come out.

  • no advice here.  i'll keep my fingers crossed it's nothing!

  • I contacted them for a different issue (mont co) and it was going to take around 3 weeks for them to come out - they said they could send someone sooner, but they wouldn't be the person specialized in torticollis. We didn't end up using them because I wanted treatment to start sooner.

Good luck - sorry you have to deal with this.

  • Jen can you keep the appointment but get a 2nd opinion from a different pedi in the meantime?
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Yes, I think I will, especially if there is a long wait for the appointment and I'm not seeing any improvement as he ages.  There is another pedi in our practice that doesn't make development goals so black & white.

  • ditto esyn...i'm that lucky mom who ended up having two of their kids needing EI services...here in chesco it works pretty much how esyn said, but your child has to have 25% delay in a developmental area to be eligible to receive services from EI (its free). taryn is right on the cusp of not having any delays, but we are choosing to continue her care directly with her service team.  she'll be discharged from the county ran EI services and we will pay for her sessions directly with the provider TheraPlay (http://www.theraplayinc.com/index.aspx). Good luck, i know how nerve wrecking it can be!!!!
