who here has sprained an ankle?

Yeah, I fell at 5 am this morning while holding the baby and crashed into his closet door and a stack of plastic storage bins. Never get up and try to walk while holding a baby after your foot has fallen asleep. Anyway.....

Got an x-ray, nothing is broken just a bad sprain. But *** it hurts!! I can't put weight on my foot without crying out in pain so I am basically useless. Do they usually offer you crutches when you sprain your ankle? All she did was wrap it up, tell me to take ibuprofen and ice it. Not really helping so far. How long before it starts feeling better? I don't even see how I am going to be able to get the kids dropped off at daycare tomorrow if it still feels like this.

Re: who here has sprained an ankle?

  • I sprained my ankle years ago (but I'm seriously accident prone, any kind of womanly grace totally skipped by me) and I recall having crutches. If it's bad enough to hurt when you walk on it, you should have crutches for at least a few days. Where did you go?

  • I've never sprained my ankle, but DH has. They gave him an air cast, a prescription for extra strength Motrin, and a prescription for crutches (this was an urgent care place). No idea they gave prescriptions for crutches and it was annoying because no pharmacies I could find actually carried crutches so I ended up buying a set from Walgreens. I think he was on the crutches for less than a week?

    I hope you recover quickly!!

  • Raises hand.  I sprained my ankle pretty badly in elementary school and had crutches.  I can't remember much else with regards to how long it took to heal though.  I was jumping on the top of my friends bunk bed and fell off.

I went to Right Time since I was right down the road from them and there was no wait. Hmmmm. I have never had to have crutches before, so I didn't know what warranted them. She acted like since nothing was broken I was good to go.

  • I sprained my ankle coming down the stair and totally missed a step. I agree with you, that s*^! hurts!! Oh and idiot me decided to take a nap forgetting to apply any ice. When I woke up my ankle was the size of a grapefruit :( Anywho, patient first did give me crutches. I almost sprained the other ankle using those darn things. But the idea is you want to keep the weight off the injured ankle so you don't make it worse.
  • I haven't but I just wanted to say I hope you feel better soon!
  • Oh no. Spraining your ankle is the worst! I am the master at spraining ankles. I've done it so many times. I have plenty of air casts and a set of crutches if you need them! Really the only thing you can do is ice it and keep it elevated. Wrap it with an ace bandage and wear sneakers.
I hope it starts to feel better ASAP!

  • Yikes!  Glad your little guy is okay, and boo for you being hurt! :(

I haven't sprained anything (knock on wood!), but DH sprained his ankle pretty badly in college when he slipped on ice and he wound up in the ER, where they gave him an air cast, Rx for extra strength Motrin, and crutches.  He was on crutches for a week or so, I guess?  I would definitely go get some if I were you - DH has had all kinds of sports injuries and his hurt badly enough that he couldn't go w/o the crutches, so I'm assuming that pain from a sprain is no joke!

  • Maybe they didn't give them to you because they didn't have them? I don't know if you can just buy them somewhere like CVS, etc, but it seems if it hurts that bad to walk on it then you are doing more harm and delaying healing??

  • Oh no!! I'm so sorry!! I sprained my ankle a long time ago. I think I got an air cast and told to ice and prop it up. Sprains suck because you don't get any other help, just go rest.
