work issue

I waitress part time and was working this past Sunday night. We are always very busy the day before a holiday, so the night was a bit crazy. We have a manager who is still fairly new and he was working that night. He is young, laid back, and really isn't the greatest at doing his job. Toward the end of the night I saw him bringing out a bottle of vodka for a table of people. I didn't think much of it until I found out after that he had taken that table, rang everything in, and kept the tip for himself. ( a LARGE tip ) I was irate. He was bragging about the tip, too and when I asked him why he did not have me take the table he said to me, (half jokingly) stop being greedy! Then he made some remark about how little he made after taxes.

I was so angry last night and so were the other girls I was working with. He is a manager... NOT a server and he most definitely should not be allowed to take our tables. He gets paid hourly, we make almost all of our money from our tips. He should have came up to me and told me to take care of that table, I have done bottle service plenty of times before, it's not like I am unfamilair with it.

I want to go to the GM and tell him what happened. Do I have a right to be upset? I feel as though I definitely do. How should I bring it up with the GM? I definitely want to do it in person and not over the phone. I was planning on going in this Wednesday to speak with him.

  • At a minimum, I'd ask what the company policy is on managers taking tables.  Find that out first.  If there is a policy against it, then you can tell him that there has been an issue w/ a manager doing this.

    If there isn't a policy, then perhaps suggest that one be put in place.

    This exactly. Sounds like he knew the people and knew he would be getting a large tip.

    If it was all kept on the down-low, and you just happened to catch it, I would probably just go to him directly and ask him the policy. BUt since he bragged (what an idiot!), I would go to the GM and first ask the policy.

  • I am pretty positive he did not know them.  I would have understood more if he had.
  • I agree with learning the policy.  I have waitressed at several different types of establishments, and I've never had a policy where a manager couldn't take a table.

  • I'm going to bet he probably pocketed the tip, which is a big no-no when it comes to taxes.We just recently had a come to Jesus talk with our staff because our accountant found quite a bit of our staff were not claiming their tips.

    I'm a manager at a restaurant and I leave the floor to the waitresses unless we are extremely busy and they need help taking out food, cleaning up, or making sure the guests are served whatever they need. That being said, when it comes to tips, the waitresses get the bulk of it, and whoever else helped the customer out sometimes gets a small cut in it. Usually the waitress is the one to hand over some of the tip money. We view it as the only right thing to do as every waitress gets paid the minimum wage of 7.25, not a waitress wage. Kitchen staff have their own assigned duties and to help out the waitresses takes away from the kitchen.

    Definitely talk to the GM about any policy on a manager taking tables, it might be an okay thing, but I'm sure for tax reasons, they might want to know it happened anyway. I doubt they'd be too happy to hear an entire bottle of vodka went out to a single table.

    BTW, it sounds like the new manager is new to being a manager all around, I'm going to guess he was a hire-out not one that was promoted from within. In my experience, the promoted staff tend to do better than the ones we hire on as a manager from the start, and I'm the one that trains them.
