Occupational Therapists?

My sis is in the application process (waiting to hear back from the admissions offices) for grad school to become an Occupational Therapist.

Quick question: How competive is this field? And, how competitive are the programs of study?

She has her undergrad in the Fine Arts (dance).

Re: Occupational Therapists?

  • I've been an OT for 15 years. At that time it was VERY competitive. Between my school and the University of Minnesota (2 of 3 colleges in the state with OT) 100 students were admitted each year. This was back when it was a BS program, not a  master's program.

I'm not sure if they have specific undergrad degrees they are looking for for applicants, but I would think those with psychology, kinesiology, biology, and other science related ones might get priority.

I would recommend that she has racked up a lot of volunteer hours with therapists or related areas.

Jobs vary throughout the country. I left Minnesota because that market was saturated. Here in CO I have never had a problem finding a job.

  • (I work in university admissions at a school with an OT program.)

Yes, programs are competitive nationwide. I believe our program received about 400 applications for 26 spots (small, private university). Unfortunately with an undergrad in Fine Arts, she will be at a disadvantage because she more than likely has not completed many of the prerequisite classes for admission nor will have many of the clinical observation hours that her psychology/kinesiology counterparts will have completed.

If she is not admitted but set on it, I'd encourage her to take the classes she is missing, get a killer GPA and reapply. Good luck to her!

I know she has completed all of the prerequisities each of the schools she has applied to require. All of them she has acheived A's and a few B's. And, I know she has s ton of volunteer hours. But are those hours the same as clinical observation hours? I guess the other question would be what about GRE scores? She is a  super hard worker and very dedicated, but isn't a good standardized test taker. I think her score was a little on the low side, would that automatically put her app in the reject pile?

  • I just started the occupation therapy assistant program at a near by community college. I have my BA but need this associate degree before I can apply for graduate school if I chose to. Could she do this as well?
  • I have been an OT for 2 years, I am in NYC so my info will probably be different then other areas, schools were competitive to get into most class sizes were under 30 kids with may more applying, around here most of the schools are now dual programs so even thou she has an undergrad degree in something unrelated she would be fine as long as she met all of the prerequisites had a great GPA and volunteer experience she should be ok, my undergrad degree was in a similar field so I had already taken anatomy but because the program was a dual bachelors and masters program I had to take anatomy again they won't replace it because in the program. As for the GRE most schools in NY don't require them.
As far as jobs it is competive here but there are stil a lot of opening our board of education is greatly understaffed,  the hospitals and nursing homes still have job openings. I get the OT advance monthly, it's free, she should sign up and they constantly have job postings across the country.

Each program as different requirements so only they will make that decision of how her test scores will affect her admission. Great to hear she is on the right track!

On Tuesday, the Internet was abuzz with admirers pointing to Billups? abrasion as addition archetype of the ?Clippers Curse.?

One problem. There is no Clippers Curse. What believers accede a anathema the blow of the apple considers a alternation of bad administration decisions.Cheap Nike Shoes Oh sure, there are times if players accept been injured: Blake Griffin absent his aboriginal division because of a knee injury. Danny Manning, the Clippers? top aces in 1988, blew out his knee in his amateur season. Bill Walton had a alternation of bottom injuries during his seasons with the team.

No, because the Lakers admiral accept a history of authoritative astute abstract picks and trades, abrogation the aggregation in position to balance bound from setbacks.

Look at the Clippers? abstract history: In 1981, they drafted Tom Chambers, who went on to accept a solid career ? with Seattle and Phoenix. Afterwards he averaged 17.4 credibility for the Clippers, they traded him to the SuperSonics for James Donaldson, Greg Kelser and Mark Radford. To be fair, the Clippers did abstract a approaching Hall of Famer in 1981: Tony Gwynn, who is in the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1983, the Clippers called Byron Scott, again traded him to the Lakers. In 1984, they called Lancaster Gordon with the eighth all-embracing aces of the draft. Lancaster Gordon? Nike jordans shoes sales Meanwhile, eight picks later, the Utah Jazz called John Stockton. (By the way, that year the Lakers called A.C. Green with the 23rd pick.)
