Do you think it is okay for parents to smoke pot?

I saw an article about this in the magazine Redbook. I was wondering what you think about this topic. Of course, the parents said that they dont smoke around the kids and that they hide it from them. They said they do it so have less stress and that it was like just another vice, like drinking.

I think that if you have to lie about something then you probably shouldnt be doing it. All the parents who smoked, said that they wouldnt want their kids doing it. In addition, it is scary the idea of parents being stoned when they taking care of their kids.

What do you think? Do you think that if you smoke week you should have to give it up when you become a parent?

  • I'm always going to remember something my friend's mom said when we were at university: "I hardly even drank when I had kids. If something happened and I couldn't properly respond I would've felt ridiculously guilty." I think the same goes for getting high.
  • I think the same as with alcohol that if it is just a little from time to time that it doesn't bother me. If you are stoned out of your mind, that is something different. That being said, I am not a fan of weed and don't get the appeal, but to each their own.
  • I don't believe that if you are taking care of children you should be impared.  As most people don't know how impared they are when they are smoking pot (you shouldn't drive after smoking it...what if you need to the to the hospital or get , something from a store), they shouldn't smoke if they are going to be with their kids.  Plus, darn it's frickin' illegal...role models, folks, role models.

In theory, I am totally on board with this, but I know that parents have dinner parties when the kids are sleeping and might have too much to drink that would impare their driving skills. Of course they shouldn't drive intoxicated whether it be by alcohol or marijuana, but I don't think that is the best argument for why they shouldn't do either one. The illegal bit, though, is a pretty darn good argument!

  • If it's illegal where I was living w/ kids, then for me, it'd be a hard no (meaning inflexible).  Up there with tax evasion and murder.  Seriously though, I wouldn't engage in no kidding criminally punishable behavior if I had kids.  Yes, I know, excessive speeding is a felony in some jurisdictions (hello, VA), so that's a broad statement, but sincerely, I'd do my level best to color within the lines, if I were responsible for kids.

If it were legal, so without fear of arrest/drama/etc, personally, I still wouldn't do it b/c it's not my style (never tried and not interested to at this point--- aka 35yrs old). That said, for other parents, it wouldn't bother me if a) it were legal and b) and the parents were responsible about it (ie not while watching the kids, etc).

  • It's the illegality that bothers me most with this... I don't think I was more impaired doing that (years ago!) than I am now when I have too much to drink. But one will get me in trouble with the law and one won't and it's just not worth it as an adult. It's a really silly risk when there are other people you're responsible for, IMO. I can't even imagine explaining getting in trouble with the law to my family!

  • I view the question the same way I would if you asked 'is it okay for parents to drink'. I think it is fine as long as one parent would still be able to take control in an emergency. If I had two glasses of wine of course I wouldn't be able to drive but I would still be able to call an ambulance/ order a taxi/ call a neighbor, etc. I think it's the same for people who smoke pot (people I know who do smoke don't get off their face like George Micheal and they are far from 'stoners' and include Drs and other professionals). And no I'm not one of them (as a teenager yes, but as an adult I have no tolerance for it and would just be on the floor crying out for a Taco Bell Chicken Gorgita) - but I don't judge those who do.

Regarding the legality I wouldn't even consider it illegal here in London. It's been decriminalised significantly. I've never heard of anyone getting in trouble for possesing an amount for personal use. You can even buy it pretty openly at some tube stations.

Regarding my kids doing it, again same view as drinking.

    I agree with you Dublin.

I also can no longer tolerate it, but I have friends who who are parents who do and it doesn't bother me or make me judge them. Unless they do it in front of me I can't even tell they have smoked.

  • No. I had a friend whose dad smoked pot and when my friend was in high school they started smoking together. I umderstand pot is not terribly dangerous bur it is my personal opinion that parents should not be doimg.illegal things or encouraging/allowing their children to do it. It doesn't matter to me that smoking weed probably shouldn't be illegal--it is and that means I won't be doing it. Sorry for the typos. On my phone.

  • I should add I've never been into pot so that may influence my opinion.

  • DH has a friend with 3 kids who smokes pot on a regular basis while caring for her kids.  I am completely freaked out by this--what if something happens to one of her kids?  I hate hanging out with her with the kids when she's obviously stoned.  I feel I am the main caretaker of HER kids when we're around.
