Do I have to change my passport to my married name?

when we were married 6 years ago, we got passports. b/c I was still single when we applied for my passport, I had to apply under my madien name. now that we are going to the carribbean, do I need to apply for a new passport under my married name?

TIA

Re: Do I have to change my passport to my married name?

  • No. Just book your plane ticket in your maiden name.

thank you, so then, I would have to use my passport as a form of id since my drivers license is under my married name, right?
  • If everything else is changed over to your married name, I would just get a new passport.  As pp said, you can book your ticket under your maiden name and use your passport as id, but I'd be worried about everything matching.   I did a name change on my passport when I got married just so it would match everything (tickets, driver's license, credit cards, social security card) just to avoid any question/issue.  I think it was 75 dollars to renew and it was fairly easy and the new passport came within a few weeks.
  • I've used my passport with my maiden name for 2 years, and have never had any issues.

Book all travel in the name that matches the passport (airline, hotel, car, etc). When anyone asks for ID, provide your passport. It's as legitimate as any form of state ID. If you're worried, bring a copy of your marriage certificate. One of my friends presented her passport (maiden name), marriage cert., new DL, and this was accepted at border crossing (if travel is booked in married name).

Every time we've travelled this way, the custom's officer assumes we are on our honeymoon and congratulates us :-) I'll happily accept that.

Yes, just use your passport. It's valid government issued ID and it's all you need.
  • I agree with pps, as long as the ticket name matches the passport name that is all that matters. You won't need to show your drivers license as id if you show your passport

Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • I agree with everyone else - just book the tickets in your maiden name.  I've been traveling for 1.5 years using my maiden name passport.  All my other documents - license, credit cards, vaccination records, etc. - are in married name, and I haven't had any issues.

  • My passport is still in my maiden name, and I've been married five years (almost 6). Just make sure your ticket is booked in that name.
  • you dont have to but just be aware that you have to book your flights with the name shown on your passport. the air tickets and passport have to match.

also for international travel your drivers license is NOT an ok form of id. only your passport.

Now the renewal fee is the same as a brand new issuance; it's $110 for a passport book

(Turn around time is pretty quick right now though; my new married-name passport came in 8 business days)
