Where did you stay in St. John?
I'm finding more vacation rentals than hotels.
Re: Where did you stay in St. John?
There are only two resorts- Westin and Caneel Bay. Caneel is signficantly more expensive, but also more luxurious and intimate. There are other smaller hotels, but if you want a resort, they are your two choices. Also, not sure when you were looking to go, but Caneel closes down once a year for about a month during the fall. So that limits choices even more!
That being said, I stayed at the Westin. I loved the idea of Caneel Bay, but at the end of the day, I'm a Starwood junkie!

We stayed at Caneel bay and loved it!
My friends stayed at the Westin and had great things to say about it as well.
There are a lot of villas/condos to rent as well.
I have been to St. John three times (it's my favorite Caribbean island). The first time we stayed in a villa and really enjoyed it. One thing to think about though is that St. John is 2/3rds national park, so there are not very many villas that are on the beach. But most villas have fantastic views. Some are very luxurious, but you can also find more affordable ones. We enjoyed the villa experience for the space and privacy. And while our villa was directly on the water (a rocky beach), I missed being able to have direct sandy beach access.
There are only two resorts on the island, Caneel Bay and the Westin. I stayed at Caneel on my last trip there and that was my favorite. The property is very spreadout, and there are seven different beaches to visit at the resort. We loved having such easy access to the beaches there. The rooms are very comfortable, but they are on the rustic side (don't expect the Four Seasons, even though it's expensive, you're paying for the amazing location.). I have not stayed at the Westin. It's on a manmade beach, so it would not be my first choice.
We also stayed at a bed and breakfast, Estate Lindholm. It's a 15 minute hike to two beautiful beaches. The rooms were comfortable, there were nice views of the harbor, and the hosts were great.
One good thing about St. John is that there are many different gorgeous beaches to visit, so no matter where you stay, you should explore the island and different beaches.
