trying to be crafty.

Basically, we are in need of a few extra bucks, but in our current situation, I can't afford to work much (unless it was an awesome job) And I'd rather not leave Q with anyone anyways. I am liking the idea of making something at home and selling it. I crochet a little, so thats an idea, but I'd like to learn to make jewelry of some sort maybe. Really just brainstorming today and planning a trip to the craft store tonight or tomorrow. I've been thinking of this for a while, I just need to make it happen!!

Re: trying to be crafty.

  • Not to be discouraging, but jewelry making (and in fact, most crafts) can be pretty expensive to start out (supplies and tools)... do you have a hobby you already do that you can expand, instead of starting from scratch?

  • Would you set up an etsy shop or find a local boutique that would carry the stuff you make?

I will warn you that if you really plan to try make this work it is a ton of extra work to do. I sewed for a local children's/baby boutique for a good year and it does get exhausting after all while especially if whatever you are making is time consuming. If it can be done in minutes then maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

  • Crafts are expensive. Have you thought about selling Avon or anything? I've got a couple frineds that do that and are able to make a little cash....

  • I also agree with what CD said. Looking at what it's going to cost you, then do the math if it'll be realistic to start something new. Generally it's easier to stick with something you know how to do.

  • These are good points. I suppose I'll be looking into all my options/costs. I did try to sell Mary Kay once, but it didn't go so well for me. Just not my thing I guess. I was supposed to have an arena to work horses in, but that fell thru also. Bleh.

  • I'm sorry that the arena for the horses fell through.

  • Otherwise, like you said you tried Mary Kay once.. have you thought about doing something like Watkins or Epicure - spice/food/cleaning related. Especially when it's a product people use all the time they will need to replace it and food items are always getting used so maybe that would be easier.

  • would it be possible to get a pt job during the hours that h is home? it may suck, but you could probably work fri-sun and 2 days per week and make money when h can be at home watching the baby.

I'm looking into that, for sure. There aren't many job openings around here though :(
