House hunting permissive TDY

Since M's first PCS was a more unique situation (USAFA to here), there are a few things relating to this PCS that we're not quite sure about.

For example, the house hunting permissive TDY. Last time around, M had 60 days of leave, reported here, and then we used the 10 days to figure out where we wanted to live before heading off to ASBC. This time, we want to use it before our PCS. Then again, it could be nice to have a few days to paint and get settled in our new place.

So, my question. Do all 10 days need to be used consecutively? Or would it be possible to split them up -- say 5 before the PCS and 5 after? (I'm assuming it's the former, but hoping it's the latter.)

Re: House hunting permissive TDY

  • It all has to be used at once, and over a full week. So in order to get all 10 days he would have to start on Ithink a Friday since it counts the weekend, full week, and next weekend. When we moved to WA on the last PCS we counted out how much leave H had, plus house hunting leave, plus travel days and used them all up since H was going on deployment as soon as he checked in. So we counted backwards from his check in no later than date to figure out when to check out of the previous command.

  • Ah, that's what I figured. Wishful thinking :) It's good to know it has to be used over a full week. Thanks for that heads-up!
  • Because I'm nosy where are you headed?  You don't have to be specific if you don't want to...North, South, East, West?

  • We just found out on Friday afternoon and I'm still processing/in denial and am therefore not ready to share such information yet. Haha, trust me, I know I'm ridiculous. Suddenly I feel like my 14-year-old self again who just found out she's leaving California (and is semi-depressed about it). But we'll be staying on this side of the country, for better or worse!

Sorry to hear that.  Hopefully it won't be nearly as bad as you're thinking.

When H first got orders to WA about 2 years ago I instantly started crying.  We are both from NY, and I have never not lived near my family.  Other than college I lived with my parents until I got married.  So the idea of living on the other side of the country was horrid to me.  Then we got there and I absolutely loved it, and now that we are gone already I really miss it.  So hopefully it turns out like that for you!

  • Can he use regular leave at one end? I think one time DH got a couple days leave approved from the command he was leaving and then initiated house hunting leave when he checked in with the new command.

  • Amaristella- Yes, we'd probably rather use the leave on the new-base side of things since hopefully it will only take a couple days and a Saturday to start to settle in, whereas house hunting will likely take longer.

And dnbeach - thanks for the pep talk! You're so sweet. I probably sounded more upset about it than I am. It's actually going to be a great assignment, I think, and we're overall pretty happy about it (M is downright ecstatic). I'm just a California girl at heart and was hoping to either stay here or go on a grand adventure.

So Friday and Saturday I was a bit surprised since we weren't even expected orders yet, Sunday and Monday I was generally pleased with the assignment, and today I've been mourning the loss of our lifestyle here. I'm sure I'll be fine whenever I stop PMSing. Smile

I would be really really happy if you were headed near me! :) But I am sorry its taking a bit for you  to process. Your great at making the best out of things so I'm sure this will be a great move.

ETA: Never mind comprehension fail on my part as I read that you won't be in California.
