Fort Lewis

Hey ladies!  For the past 6 months we thought we were going to Germany, so I have been focusing all of my attention and research there.  A few weeks ago we found out H's orders were changed and in about a month we are headed to Fort Lewis.  For those who are stationed there/have been stationed there, can you give me some information on best areas to live?  I am a planner and would love to start doing some research on areas!  Thanks!

  • My BIL is stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, and he and my sister live in Yelm. I can't remember the name of the community, but it's pretty nice and secluded, you have to have a key card to access the front gate, and it's surrounded by trees and there's a lake and a pool. The only problem is that cell phone coverage is spotty since it's so remote.

My mom and stepdad live in Roy, which is a bit closer to the base than Yelm. If you like small towns, Roy is great. They have one main street that has a drive-thru coffee stand, two or three small bar/restaurant type places (one of them has karaoke), a liquor store/gas station, and the fire department. They have a rodeo every year, as well.

I know some folks stationed there that live as far north as Federal Way, Fife, Kent and even Renton, but then you have to deal with rush-hour traffic on I-5, which can be a pain, especially during construction season...err, I mean summer lol.

  • I'm not down there, but my father used to be and my whole fam is in Washington state (we're at a base more north in the state)

How are away are you willing to commute (minutes-wise.. by miles vs. minutes are a huge difference in that area with rush hour traffic :P ).

Are you hoping to find a job there as well? If so, what field of study? (that may also help you find a place that is more central to both job areas)

  • I remembered the name of my sister's housing community: Clearwood! (I knew it had something to do with wood/forest/etc). Link: http://www.clearwood-yelm.com/

I would say 20 minutes for my H.  Since I will be 5ish months pregnant when we move and get settled I am not going to look for a new job, I am hoping that my company will let me work from home (cross your fingers)!  I am a corporate recruiter, and my company's parent company is in Seattle, so hopefully that will work out.
