Non-clicky, non-sexxxytime poll: Lent

Mardi Gras is tonight, which means tomorrow is the start of lent.

Do you and/or H observe Lent? Even if you don't go to church, do you use Lent as a time to try to give up something that's important to you but may be a guilty pleasure? Or a way to check in on New Year's Resolutions?

EDIT: if you're observing Lent, what are you giving up this year?

And, go.

  • We don't observe lent. I used to to a certain extent when I was in school because my friends all observed it.

  • I've given up things for the past few years.  I've given up coffee, soda, and maybe chocolate.  I don't remember.  I'm trying to think of something for this year.  DH makes fun of me because I give things up.  I'm not Catholic, not that you have to be Catholic to observe Lent but I kind of like the challenge.  I'm not sure what I'll do this year.  I know some people give up something like not going to the gym, so they will go to the gym more often.
  • We do not observe lent.

  • the past few years i haven't been giving up anything (unless you count time). this year i have made a resolution to read the entire bible cover to cover. i spend at least 15 minutes every day reading the bible. i'm training for a half-marathon to stay active & in shape. i am also increasing the amount of time i've volunteered in the community. i get more out of observing Lent by doing than giving up. i try not eat meat on ash wednesday and fridays but have a horrible habit of forgetting.

one year i made myself run an extra mile to my typical run for every time i cursed. i covered a lot of land that year.

  • I don't honestly know the last time I set foot inside a church for anything besides a wedding (or for touring the church, like you do in Europe and stuff).  I'm non-practicing Methodist - I'm pretty sure they never give anything up.  I didn't even know tomorrow was Ash Wednesday until I heard it on the radio today.

  • Yes, we observe Lent.  (We're practicing Catholics.)  We'll go to Mass tomorrow to get our ashes, and we'll do meatless Fridays.

Every other year, I've given up Diet Coke.  This year...DH and I agreed to give up TV.  It's going to be a long 40 days.

One year I gave up the internet for Lent. I thought it would be a long 40 days ... but after a few days I got used to it and life felt better; I got more done at work so I felt like less of a slacker; I spent more time with my GF (now wife); I called my parents more; etc. This year I'm doing that again, so, we'll see what happens.

wait--this means no nesting? (too late for you to answer now, too, right?)

and i'm also assuming this means outside of work-related-work, right? because i wouldn't be able to work without the internet.

  • We're not catholic and don't observe lent in the traditional sense. In our church it's considered a time to reflect and refocus, leading up to Easter.

I do plan on giving up sweets this year. A coworker is giving up coffee and another is giving up soda, so there will be some good motivation at work to stick with it. That's not really a lent "thing" in my mind, but it's something I'd like to be more disciplined with.

Haha ... well, this is proof I wasn't quite awake. I'm giving up video games for Lent, but some huge % of what I use the internet for is reading about/watching video games. So it will be almost like giving up the internet. TN gets to say :D.

  • I've never really given anything up for Lent before.  I'm aware of Mardi Gras and Lent's other Holy Days because I have many friends who are practicing Catholics and Lutherans who observe Lent.  They typically give up alcohol, TV, FB, or caffeine.

  • I haven't been a practicing anything religion-wise in awhile, but I typically try to give something up for lent.  Last year I think it was coffee, though I didn't realize it was lent until a week in, so I technically cheated for a week haha.

This year I'm going to attempt to give up dairy.  I have a lot of issues with milk (lactose intolerance that may or may not be more of an allergy than just an intolerance), so I don't eat it too much.  I've been "trying" to give it up for awhile (dang froyo and cheese on my sammiches), so I'm using lent as a final jumping off point to be done with it.  Hopefully it works out :)

I'm non-practicing Lutheran and this is what it was in our church. My church always had Lenton Soup dinners on Wednesday where they conducted extra bible study.

I hadn't heard of giving up something for Lent until junior high when I had a bunch of Catholic friends. I used to give up swearing.

Growing up I went to a Lutheran church and later a nondenominational one, and this is how it was approached by both. In the latter it was common for people to fast for one meal a day and to use that time for reflection, prayer and Bible study.

  • i decided i'm not eating chocolate or fast food from mcdonalds, tacobell, wendy's and those type.. like drive through places. but, if i want something from my restaurant, i can do that. :) it will help me get away from empty food that i don't love anyway!

  • We observe Lent, but we apparently suck at it. LMAO

We're Catholic, and aren't supposed to eat meat (we can have seafood) on Ash Wednesday or on Fridays. We both had Whoppers. Whoops. And we didn't even go to church to get ashes! I feel horrible. But hopefully we can make it to a few Wednesday Masses and some Sunday Masses again.

Also, DH is giving up coffee, and I'm giving up chocolate.
