co-teacher issue, advice

So yesterday one of my co-teachers stayed up in the classroom to work on her grades, while I took the kids down to the lab (no problem) we were just doing some computer program.

Issue #1 I asked a student to get started. Instead of complying he asks where the other teacher is. I told him she's upstairs get logged in please. So he does and for some reason his computer wasn't hooked up to the internet. He then says well I would do my work if you wouldn't have locked my f-ing computer. tried to redirect him get him to correct his language and he was like "damn, I don't know why you always make things so hard, f this" So I wrote up him and sent him to the office.

Issue #2- Student leaves without a pass, slams the door returns knocking on the door. I open it look and no one appears to be there, as I'm closing the door he pushes the door open into my stomach. No apology instead he just runs somewhere

I call upstairs to my co-teacher and ask her if she's seen either kid, she says they're both up there cooling off. I told her what happened and she says, well that's not what they told me so I just let them cool off.

I tried to talk to her about it after school and her response was pretty much well I wasn't there so I don't know what you want me to do about it.

Seriously? WTF. I want to punch her in the throat.

Anyway WWYD? Talk to the principal? Try talking to her again? Talk to the department head? I'm just so pissed.

Re: co-teacher issue, advice

  • I would maybe bring it up that the two of you may need to come up with a plan for something like this in the future...not necessarily bring up yesterday except in saying that you felt uncomfortable not feeling like there was a plan in place for situations like this that arrive and just wanting to make sure the two of you are on the same page going forward. If you need to work with her the rest of the year I think it is easier to make it "about you" than to end up engaging in a confrontation. But that sucks...

  • I totally agree with Blender. It sounds like you're frustrated (rightfully so) that she didn't back you up, and you were undermined by her decision not to send the kids to the office. I'm sure the kids, if they're anything like mine, gave her an alternate version to get her to let them stay, and she probably thinks she made the best choice given the circumstances (I mean, don't we all think that?). So, it's sucky the way it panned out, but it sounds more like an issue that the two of you need to work out than one that should be brought to the department head.
  • That sucks.  I would bring up the fact that kids are totally splitting you, which is something that they probably want.  I would try talking to her one more time and if that does't work go to the principal.
