I have a coworker who has been sick for 3 weeks straight now. She has been in here the past 3 weeks and finally went to the dr yesterday. Long story short, she has Whooping Cough.
I'm so effing p!ssed at her for being in here for 3 weeks with Whooping Cough, coughing all over everything and everyone even after we ALL told her to go to the dr's for weeks!
Just a heads up for everyone: There are Whooping Cough outbreaks in Monmouth County, Ocean County, Horsham, Langhorne, and in Morrisville. Not sure if you all want to check the last time you had your DTaP because it's spreading like wildfire. You should especially get this vaccine if you have a baby. It's potentially deadly for babies to get Whooping Cough.
Re: So pissed re: Whooping Cough
This is crazy and makes me so angry!
It's a bit extreme, but maybe workplaces should mandate employees getting certain boosters every so often, like they do for school children. A lot of people don't go to the doctor unless they are sick and I'm sure they aren't asking when the last time their boosters were given.
Also, does anyone know if a baby is protected somewhat from the first shot? Jack got his first DTaP shot on Monday.

Grrr.
I really hope she didn't get anyone else sick.
In class on Monday, I apparently offended a classmate when I made a comment about people who believe things despite all legitimate evidence otherwise- that people who refuse to vaccinate their children (provided there are no contraindications) are stupid. And she responded that she was anti-vax and that the "media has a lot to do with what the public believes, and docs might say to vax, but midwives might say otherwise".
I still think she's stupid.

Jen, I'm not sure if a baby is semi-protected at first which is why I'm mildly freaking out about this lady who I was in close contact with, having whooping cough. I'm worried that I could have or could possibly spread it to the baby. The doctors here at work said that whoever has it, is contagious for the ENTIRE time that they are sick and the bacteria can live up to 42 DAYS (!!!!) which makes it easily spreadable.
I absolutely agree with you that workplaces should mandate vaccinations. Especially if you work in an office with cubes where everyone is breathing all over everyone all day long.
One thing about the DTaP is that people don't realize that they need the booster every so often. The manager of the lady who is sick at my work actually said this morning, "I probably got that vaccine when I was a baby. I'm good, right?" Idiots.
h- that is ridiculous. for real. i would likely not be able to look at the person the same way again. i have a baby and a co-workers wife is going through some naaaasty chemo right now so people in our office are pretty good about self-containing or staying home. more for cw's wife but i'll take it.
jen- if you have the booster and are breastfeeding and jack got his first one, i would think he has some level of protection. i think breastfeeding got us through the chicken pox outbreak at daycare unscathed.
I would like to think that she thought it was no big deal or was she afraid to take time off? When I worked in NYC, you better be on death's door to take a sick day. It wasn't until I came in and passed out one day that he believed I was actually sick. I think he's gotten softer over the years, but to this day I am terrified to call in sick.
This is absolutely not the case. We can work from home and we get 34 PTO (paid time off) days a year. There is also no issue at all with taking off. Especially when we can work from home whenever we want. She very well could have just WFH or even could have taken PTO but no. She said she just had a cold at first and that she was OK. 3 weeks this went on before she finally went to the doctor.
Then she's just selfish. Thinking she's A) indispensable and you can't live without her or
she's not human and doesn't get sick.
I didn't read all the replies but man, that is so annoying. My coworker is currently sick and when I asked why he was here he was like "you came in when you were sick." Um, no..I stayed home for the first two days until I was fully medicated and then came in when I knew I wasn't contagious anymore. Big difference.
Why do people think they are SO important that they just need to be here?
My little nuggets
This just goes to show that I have a lot to learn before I give birth in August. I had no clue that you have to get re-vaccinated for certain things (aside from tetanus and the flu). ooopps - idiot mom in training right here!
tetanus is part of the tdap!
ha! see - just proves my point. off to read more books on this stuff!
I don't have much to to add, just sorry that you are dealing with this.
This is one thing I will never understand; if you're sick, stay home.
I think she's stupid and dangerous. I get crazy when I hear the ridiculous anti-vax argument. Man I'm full of UOs today...
I didn't know before I had Emma either. They gave me a booster in the hospital. I think that's pretty standard, although I could be wrong.
Stupid and dangerous is right. I'll also add careless. When I've been sick in the past, I've always been so conscious of others and tried my best to not be around people. I understand that sometimes it's hard to do that all of the time but in this case she was here for 3 weeks with people in the office begging her to go to the doctors and she didn't go until yesterday. It just makes me so angry. You are coughing your fking face off to the point where it's hard to breathe. Something is obviously wrong!!!

Don't forget to have hubby get boosters too! I was so proud of Mr.D when he asked his doc about it without my prompting him.

I didn't know either. They started airing the commercials about pertussis after DS was born so that's how I found out. When I had DD 2yrs later they gave me the booster before I left the hospital. When I found out they had WC in my school district I told my IL's who watch the kids weekly that they had to get the vaccine or not be around Eden. MIL did, but FIL refused so we compromised and he's not allowed to come over if he feels under the weather and he's not allowed to hold her until she's fully immunized. She had her 6mo shots today and the dr said in another 2 weeks she's be considered 100%.
Dr said today that his colleague in Boston is considering changing the way his practice handles patients who's parents refuse vaccines after a 9mo old contracted measles from an unvaccinated child in his waiting room and is now brain damaged from related encephalitis. I told him I agreed with that and think it's completely socially irresponsible to not get vaccinated.
I admit I try to limit play dates to people who's kids I know have been vaccinated.
Awful.
And in your list of outbreak towns you named both the town I work and the town I live in. Double awesome!
I thought the results took a couple days to come in? How did she find out in one appt? Are you sure the doc didn't just say its a possibility?
Just wondering.
Nope, she found out right away. Her dr sent her to the ER and from there they did chest X-rays and a ton of other tests. Chest X-ray came back clear which is hen they dx her with Whooping Cough the very next morning. They actually admitted her overnight because she was literally on the verge of not being able to breathe due to the severe coughing. She said at a few points she was coughing so badly that it caused her to vomit a few times. I guess because she let it go for 3 weeks without being treated, it was full blown and they could tell right away.
