Tempory housing?

My DH and I will need a temporary place to live assuming we get the new construction house we want. We will have 1-2 months (maybe 3 depending on how the construction goes) with no where to live.

We can stay with my sister and her family for some of the time but she has 3 young kids and don't want to crowd them for the whole time. We are thinking about an extended stay type of place? Any other ideas? All our furniture will be either in storage or in one of those pods in storage. Thanks in advance!

  • When I interned a summer in Detroit, we got put up in furnished apartment that had all the basic things we needed. They also rented them out to employees on work assignments for other areas. Is there something like that in the area you live?

  • We rented a furnished condo for a month and when construction took longer than normal they were thrilled to extend us another month.  I am glad we stayed in a fully furnished condo with a full kitchen.  So many extended stay places we saw had a "kitchenette" which meant a coffee maker, hot plate, and microwave.

ETA:  We also did a summer internship a few years ago.  We rented an unfurnished condo on a short-term lease.  A lot of apartment complexes are willing to do it.  We rented furniture, but in your case you'd be moving out and have your furniture to fill an apt.

  • Check craigslist - if the time period occurs over the summer you might find a college student offering a sublet.
  • You could look for an apartment that has a monthly lease.

  • I agree to look for a month to month furnished apartment.  There are several 1 bedroom complexes around here that include all utilities, cable, etc

  • Thanks! I'll look into the furnished apartment option. That might be a better idea than a extended stay.

We lived in a hotel for 5 weeks between houses and it was AMAZING!!!! It was like being on vacation (although I did still have to go to work). They had fresh baked cookies in the lobby daily, a free happy hour with food and drinks twice per week, and easy access to the gym, which was needed at that point. People came in and cleaned the place and made my bed daily. The room we got had a kitchen, so we could still cook, and I was allowed to bring my cats.

We paid a similar amount to what we would have paid for a month-to-month rental, cable, utilities, etc. in an apartment. We were able to pack everything into storage and didn't have to worry about having some in storage and needing some for the apartment. I'd do it all over again in a minute. It was exactly what I needed before the craziness of closing on the new house and moving. Do it! :-)
