Moving to MSP: Follow-Up ? RE: MN and WI
Hi. I posted here back on the 15th about DH and I moving to the MSP area and how we are looking for info about some of the suburbs. Thanks for the great, and helpful feedback! We really appreciated it.
One other question: What are the thoughts and feelings about Prescott or Hudson, WI?
Some background: We live in the Cincinnati, Ohio /Northern Kentucky area right now. The Ohio River separates the two states. Each state/side has opinions of the other one, which are both good and bad.
Does something like this exist between MN and WI? If so, what are the thoughts? Thanks.
Re: Moving to MSP: Follow-Up ? RE: MN and WI
There is some back and forth, but I'd say that most of it is regarding the 2 states football teams. Wisconsites are very passionate about their Green Bay Packers and so that is often the rivalry between the 2 states.
Depending on where you are planning to work in the MSP area, Prescott could get to be a long drive - although there are plenty of people that live in Hudson & Prescott that work in the Twin Cities area.
Not sure what the differences in taxes are, but one thing that WI has that MN doesn't have is the ability to buy alcohol on Sundays - not sure if that matters or not to you
If there's no traffic, both would take about 30 minutes... I think they're both about 30 miles away from the airport area. I would absolutely hate that commute, and the thought of driving that in any sort of weather situation makes me want to crawl up in the fetal position.
But I hate commuting generally and driving in any sort of traffic makes me stabby. One of the main reasons we moved to the 'burb we live in is that we both work there and our commute is about 3 or 4 miles.
Both Hudson & Prescott are cute towns, though.
My Cooking Blog
We live in Cottage Grove which is just north of Prescott. I work pretty close to the airport and my commute is about 20-25 mins when traffic is good. During bad winter weather, traffic on 494 towards the airport is terrible. There's only one way to get there from Prescott so bad weather can really affect commute times. I do know several people that live in Prescott and commute, so it is doable.
Prescott and Hudson are both fun towns in the summer because there are lots of people boating and events going on.
Do you live in Northern KY? My husband is from Ft. Thomas, and we go back there to visit family regularly
I have no helpful advice about suburbs however--we live in St. Paul and love it...
I'd check out the different tax situations in both states to really make an informed decision.
Also, many people in WI are trying to recall the governor, if that makes any difference to you. If you're a public employee, it might.
BTW - It's not hard to drive from one state to the other to get booze on a Sunday. I don't think that should be the driving factor in your decision.
We do (Independence). Moved here in 2008 from Denver. DH is a pilot and we debated on N. KY or Ohio. But, N. KY won out due to the not wanting to have to commute over the river to the Cincy airport, which is actually in KY...odd. Moving to MSP due to DH's job. Ft. Thomas is a nice place.
We don't drink a lot so it won't be an issue for us, but it is helpful to know.
I wouldn't live in Wisconsin with the current political climate there, I'm not even a far leftie and the governor there is an absolute tool.
That said, my cousin lives in Hudson and loves it. The property taxes are higher, but the income taxes are lower, so I'm not sure how much it balances out.
I wouldn't drive from Hudson or Prescott to the airport, because being on 494 in the winter is awful (this year is probably the exception) but some people don't mind the commute at all. I'd look at Eagan first, then Lakeville, Then parts of Apple Valley, Inver Grove Heights.
Got it, and yeah, I always found it strange that the Cincy airport is in KY as well
Anyway, welcome to MN!
