Re: Lent

  • Yes. No soda, fast food or anything prepackaged other than bread, milk and cheese. Basically a clean diet until Easter

  • We've been visiting a new church for the past few weeks that is doing a Journey of Lent calendar. Each day is a different task. I'm excited to do it! Some of the tasks include drinking tap water only for your drinks to remember to pray for those who don't have access to clean water, pick a person and pray for them three times that day, one day of no social media, one day with no technology, one day only eat one meal and during the other two meal times spend it praying for those who are hungry and don't have anything to eat, buy someone's meal, speak encouraging words to others, send someone a thank you note, text encouraging words to three people, get rid of at least one item from your closet an donate it, and my favorite which I think I should do more often is watch the 6oclock news as a family and pray together about what you saw. Theres a ton more (one for each day). (If anyone wants a copy of the calendar, just let me know and I can send it to you! I think it's really neat and hopefully will help me be a more positive person.)

To me, actions like these reflect the meaning of Lent more closely than giving up something you like just because you're "supposed to" give something up. What's the real benefit to giving up something I enjoy eating, but already do in moderation?

I view Lent as a time to become a more thoughtful, caring person, even if only temporarily. In my mind, adding positive behaviors to my life that involve reaching out to others is much more effective than doing something that only benefits me.
