Important stuff to bring on trip?

Most of you know where I'm going on Saturday. If not, PM me and I'll be happy to tell you. I just don't want to risk this being linked back to me for work. I've never traveled internationally (I don't count Mexico since we didn't leave the resort) and as this is last minute, I'm freaking out a little bit. What are some must-haves that I should pack for this trip? Any general suggestions?

Re: Important stuff to bring on trip?

  • Are the electrical plugs different?

"You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you." - Dale Carnegie
  • - check the weather

    - pack light sweaters for layering

    - insect repellant

    - Jen's suggestion about electrical plugs, converter and adapter

    - pouch for important documents, copies of passport, etc.

    - sunblock

    - anti-malarial pills? ask your dr

    - small umbrella

  • Feminine supplies
Another old nestie with a new name.
  • I always pack a change of clothes plus a few extra pairs of underwear in my carryon. There is nothing worse than having your luggage delayed a day or 2 and having no clean underwear. And maybe I just have bad luck, but this has happened to me many times, esp on international flights.

ETA: I recommend taking at least 2 different credit cards - one to have on you at all times and one to keep in your luggage. That way if something gets lost or stolen you will have a backup that will allow you to access money. (another lesson learned the hard way.) Since, this is business, I don't know if you're using a business card, but I would still take an extra 'in case of emergency' card too.

  • Great suggestions guys.

The weather will be high 70s- 80s.

I already have insect repellant, electrical plug converter/adapter, pouch for documents, feminine supplies, and sunblock. I don't need anti-malarial pills (per my doctor) but I did get a few recommended vaccines on Monday. I would have forgotten an umbrella so it's now on my list.

I'm definitely planning a change of clothes in my carry-on. My luggage getting lost is my worst nightmare. I'll have my corporate card but was planning to bring another for emergencies.

I'm not sure if I should take any cash. The recommendation is to carry only a minimal amount. My corporate card is widely accepted where I'm going but I know sometimes cards just aren't accepted at all. I assume I can convert my cash at the hotel?

My biggest concern right now is clothing. Since I work from home I have limited business apparel and a lot of the stuff I do have is now too big. I'm going to have to rip my closet apart and maybe do a little bit of shopping. I wouldn't be concerned if the trip was shorter but 2 weeks is a long time. I'm sure the hotel will be dry-cleaning but I don't want to rely on that too much.

I used to work in a corporate retail office.  I have some size 4 and 6 items you may be interested in.  Let me know if you want to take a look at them.

  • I would exchange currency at the airport or a bank before the hotel. They usually have very unfavorable exchange rates.

ETA: As for clothes, consider going to the outlets (Anne Taylor and Banana Republic are there) and getting some mix and match basics.

  • I usually try to bring some cash with me or get local currency right away at the airport. I usually end up needing it right away for things like the cab ride to the hotel. Not sure what the culture is like where you're going, but a lot of places seem to use credit cards less often than we do in the US. Random restaurants/stores/etc that don't take cards. So I like to have cash with me just in case.

ETA: Oh and I find the best way to get local currency is through the ATMs. They should be easy to find and you will get the best conversion rates that way.

So true! We exchange a minimal amount at the airport usually and then use our debit card in ATMs.

  • On the plane I like to take books and/or kindle. Definitely a pillow if you plan on sleeping any. The inflatable U-shaped ones are nice enough. I don't know if you wear contacts, but I usually bring stuff so I can take them out while I sleep when I'm on a flight that long. Also, toothbrush/toothpaste/deoderant/etc in your carryon as well.

For clothes, if I'm trying to pack light I will take all stuff that can be worn with black shoes, for example, or all with brown shoes, but not both, just so I dont have to bring double shoes. But, when traveling for work where they're paying to check my bags, sometimes I throw that advice out the window and take a little of everything. But it might be something to think about when you are shopping.

Did I mention that I am super excited for you and also really jealous! I hope you have a great trip. Will you get any sight seeing time, or will you be working a lot?

Thanks for the offer Pookie! I really need to get some of this stuff for the future anyway so I'm just going to head to the outlets like Madisen suggested.

This is great advice. I'll definitely go this route.

I'm planning to bring my iPad and I have several audiobooks downloaded. I like to read on planes but sometimes I get motion sick if I do. DH has a u-shaped pillow he got in Vegas so I may steal that. I'll definitely pack some small toiletries for the flight. I get to check a bag so while I'm going to try and keep it simple, I'll also have a little more flexibility space-wise.

Thanks! I'm really excited too. I'm hoping to get to do some sight-seeing over the weekend that I'm there. It will all just depend on how work goes. I'm willing to stay up late during the week though if it means I can take advantage of my weekend.
