Green Monster smoothies?

Is anyone into these? I just made my first one this morning, and it's really yummy. I used plain Greek yogurt, vanilla flavored almond milk, peanut butter, a frozen banana, spinach, and a little bit of ice.

Any particularly good recipes I should try?

Re: Green Monster smoothies?

  • I did these for a couple of weeks, i used frozen peaches and mango, fresh banannas and spinach and water.
  • I used to be really into smoothies...I found that bananas really made them sweeter and a nice consistency. Also, the frozen fruit at Trader Joes is great.

  • I responded on fb, but in case anyone else cares I'll answer here too.  I love one banana, fresh strawberries, spinach and water.  It's more like juice in consistency but I like it.

Yes!!! I love these things.  I make mine almost exactly the same as you, but I add a little protein powder and some ground flax seed to bulk it up and get some extra omega-3s.  A super ripe banana gives it the perfect amount of sweetness.  I drink one almost every day in the summer.

  • I've been wanting to try these.  Stupid question.  What kind of spinach?  Frozen?

No, I just got bagged baby spinach.

I may try this one. I need a non-peanut butter recipe.

Heather - you may want to try adding sunflower seed butter (if you like it).  My cousin is deathly allergic to nuts too and she eats this stuff.  I imagine it would just help give it a smoother (more milkshake-like...I won't dare say the C-word) consistency.

  • Do you taste the spinach, or does the fruit you incorporate over power it?

The kind I make has no spinach taste whatsoever.  I think the PB and banana mask it completely.  Making sure the banana has some brown spots is key though.  I typically like to eat a banana that is slightly under-ripe...but it definitely doesn't translate to a tasty smoothie.

  • I've seen some recipes that have kale and frozen berries (blues, strawberries), add some honey, ice cubes and milk (soy, regular, almond).
  • So is this just so you can get your fill of spinach? This just seems weird to me. Why not just eat a spinach salad?

Personally, I cannot stand the taste of spinach.  I have tried it a hundred different ways, and this is the best way for me to have it.

Exactly.  So I end up getting 2 fruit servings and 1 veggie serving before I even start my day.  I have been slacking with them and I feel more energetic when I have them.  I usually make them the night before and put it in one of my hubs' protein shakers and then just shake it up in the morning.
