Chicago

DH and I are considering a Chicago trip in mid-April. Any hotel recs? Neither of us have ever been, and we don't know much about the city itself.

TIA!

Re: Chicago

  • We like the Hilton Homewood Suites.  It's walking distance to the Mag Mile, has a free trolley stop out front to take you to Navy Pier, and is a manageable train ride from either airport.  They also have free daily breakfast and free light dinner/drinks during the week.
  • I highly recommend the Wit/Doubletree.
  • I've stayed at the Sofitel Water Tower and it was outstanding. My husband and I agree it was the most comfortable bed we've slept in, and we've stayed in a number of different hotels. Great location, so much within walking distance.

  • I like the Kimpton brand hotels. My favorite is the Hotel Monaco.
  • Thank you for all of the suggestions. Most of these are a little higher than we would like spend, I am definitely looking to be under $200/night.

  • If I were you, I would try Priceline.com.

This, or Hotwire. I have done Hotwire twice for Chicago with great results.

This, definitely.  We've had friends stay at Palmer House hotel for $140/night (although that may have been luck).

Sofitel is great and in a good location (plus pp is right, the beds are awesome!).  Hyatt on Wacker is really nice too.

  • I think the Palmer house hilton is generally pretty cheap? It's where my family often stays. I thought they said like $120/night but don't quote me on that. That could have been a mid-winter rate.

Haha, we booked the Palmer House HIlton last May for $85 per night via Priceline (MIllennium Park area).  love priceline!  there's a deal on travelzoo right now also for the Allerton.

Chicago is another city where I think you can reasonably expect to pay no more than $120 for a 4 star hotel if you shop around.

Ha, maybe I'm mistaken and it was $140 for the entire wknd because I remember them saying what a killer deal it was.
  • I don't know anything about the Palmer but I recommended Priceline because I have had nothing but great things happen when using their bidding option.  I always use it in big cities to get a downtown hotel and have had nothing but fantastic hotels.

I also use Betterbidding.com to assist me with my bid and stay at 4 stars or higher to ensure it will be good.

  • What location would you suggest putting in for something like priceline or hotwire? I know many people who have had good luck with both of these, but the one time we used hotwire, while our hotel was still nice, the "area" that it covered was was much farther away than we were anticipating (I believe it was in Providence). I know nothing about Chicago so I want to make sure we are looking in a good area/convenient area.

Thanks for all of the tips!

Thanks for all of the tips!

Your first choice should be N. Michigan Ave (magnificent mile) and 2nd choice is Millennium Park Area.  If you get within these two zones, you should be walking distance to most of the touristy things.  check out betterbidding.com for more info

  • I've been seeing lots of Chicago hotel deals on sites like Jetsetter and SniqueAway lately. I think there's a Kimpton hotel on SniqueAway for around $150 per night right now.

Chicago is a fun city with lots to do. It also has a great train system which makes it pretty easy to get anywhere. We always try to stay within a few blocks of a train stop. Mag Mile is good, but last time we stayed in the theater district  (Hampton Inn Majestic) which turned out to be good as well.

  • If you want to be within walking distance of shops, restaurants, etc. (well there are many places that fit this bill), but I would recommend Michigan Ave. We have enjoyed staying at the Westin Michigan Ave. A lot of times Starwood hotels have deals online. Last year, we booked two nights plus parking both nights (which was $50/day alone) for $180 TOTAL. We had to prepay and it was an online-only deal.

Also, a lot of times Starwood hotels run a stay for three nights, get one night free. We're staying at the Westin in San Fran this summer and they were running that deal. You might check the Westin's website to see if they have any specials going on currently. The beds were comfy, the hotel was beautiful and we had great service, plus it's close to so many things (it's right across the street from John Hancock and Water Tower).
