Seriously mind-blowing

I know children are sponges when it comes to languages, but sometimes it's hard to figure out just how much DD is picking up of French. She's been in school about 4 weeks here and can count, say some colors and say basic polite phrases like "my name is," "how are you," "have a nice day," etc. Seems pretty normal, but she just completely astounded me by repeating a conversation I had with the director of her school today, in English, when I had the conversation in French! She understands so much more than I have been giving her credit for...

  • Awesome! :)

  • I'm teaching pre-school English this year and having a ball. It's fascinating how quickly the kids learn, and how well they pronounce right from the beginning! Congrats to your petit one!
  • how cool for you and what an opportunity for her to be exposed to so many languages at an early age!
  • That's great!

I really wish I learned another language when I was young.

  • That is awesome!!! I'm hoping my LO will learn a lot of German after we move. He won't have the same exposure that your DD has, at least not at first, but this gives me great hope!

  • That's awesome! I wish I was a sponge like that, haha. DH and I have been talking about how jealous we are of bilingual people. I just want to wake up tomorrow and speak Mandarin! :)
  • That is excellent! How old is she? This is encouraging as H and I plan on sending out non existent children to the local schools in Geneva.

She'll be 4 in May. The big question is how to keep up her French once we move back to the U.S., but we'll figure it out somehow.

I think you could be surprised what could be available to you in NYC for French speakers her age.

I know I'm surprised by what is offered in Chicago for German. There is even a French International School downtown.

I know there will be tons of options, it's just a matter of finding something that works schedule and distance-wise and prioritizing between everything else- ballet classes (she looooves ballet), play dates, etc. and fitting it all in.

Totally understand! Does she take ballet in Paris? I loved taking ballet classes as a kid and took them till I graduated HS. Hopefully, you find the right balance when you are back.

Yes, it was one of the things we looked at in addition to looking for apartments and pre-school. She's at the Academie Americaine de Danse Paris and loves it!

  • That is great!  DS doesn't speak as much, but I know he is learning.  He speaks English with me, Irish with DH and German at Kindergarten.  When I try to use an Irish word he corrects me with the English word.  He knows who is supposed to speak which language.  lol
