Cruise vs. Beach vacay

DH and I are planning a romantic get away.  I have only been on a cruise once and DH never has. We live in north FL and we're debating whether we should take a cruise to the Bahamas or spend some time at the beach in the panhandle, or maybe do a theme park/beach combo trip.  The original plan was a getaway to Charleston, but we're starting to itch for some warm weather and pool time.

Any thoughts or ideas? We'd like to keep it fairly cheap and relaxing ... like a Corona commercial.  LOL

Other suggestions are welcome!

TIA!

Re: Cruise vs. Beach vacay

  • both have their pros and cons. personally i'd skip the cruise to the bahamas. can you do one that goes to other islands?

as for beach you live in south florida. why not fly to one of the islands and get a good beach for your vacay?

and what does 'fairly cheap' mean? What time of year?

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

Probably in late March or in April.  We'd want to take a long weekend, maybe 3-4 nights, and try to spend less than $150 a night.

  • When I wanted "Corona commercial" I went to Isla Mujeres, which is off the coast from Cancun. It's also relatively inexpensive and pretty chill.

Ok, seeing your second post Isla Mujeres might technically work, but you're talking about prime spring break time so places could be more expensive or booked by now.

  • we just got back from Jamaica, which i don't think is a long flight from Florida. We stayed at The Jewel Dunn's River and had the best time!! Its probably more than $150 a night... BUT its an all inclusive, so you really don't have to spend ANY other money once you get there. All the food you want is included, all the drinks, a bunch of activities (pool, sailboat use, kayak use, shows at night). The food was great ( not just a buffet- they also had a few restaurants to pick from like a hibachi place, an italian place, a brick over pizza place, a grill with wraps and burgers). One night they did "Dinner on the Pier"- it was 5 or 6 course meal almost like a wedding outside under the stars :-)

The staff here is incredible.... can't tell you how many times I heard "what can I get your my lady?" or "need anything my lady?" they really spoil you!! its adults only, so if you're looking to get away from the kids and just zone out for a few days- it might be worth looking into :-)

  • I would choose beach.  theme park or cruise don't sound relaxing or fun to me
  • I think theme parks and cruises can be fun (one of our favorite long weekends together was Disney World, and we did a cruise for our honeymoon) but neither of those fit the relaxing beach idea.  Cruise ship pools are really crowded with lots of kids, and the time in ports is sometimes limited and the port area beaches can be very crowded.  I know some ships go to 'private islands' but I've never been to one of those.  For a quick getaway to relax on the beach, I'd probably do an online search for package deals to Mexico or DR.
  • I'd skip the cruise. The cruise I went on seemed FAR from relaxing. Aways had to be somewhere. Could never find a lay out spot. Just not fun. Try maybe an AI.You can get some pretty good weekend getaway deals. Try cheapcaribbean.com
