Baby names

So along with me being so excited to finally have my hubby ready, i love thinking about the day we start TTC AND the day we bring home our baby.

When we started dating 12 yeas ago we joke about baby names. We always thought we'd name our son Jeremy. We joke about it. He has asked on numerous occasions "how's Jeremy doing?" while patting my tummy. Now we don't know if that name is over done with us.

For girls...yes I know a lot of you will hate this but I've ALAWYS love Kahlua Courtny Collins. I think it's adorable as do most of my family and friends..the hubs? Not so much. So we have thought about other names. One day we realized we love the name Zoe. Then the other day he was listening to the Billy Joel song "Downeaster Alexa" and told me he loves the name Alexa. I love it too. So now we have 2 girls names and aren't sure on the boys.

How many of you had the name picked out before you saw your baby? I LOVE these names but wonder if I'll see our baby and think "hell no!".

I also love love love the name Emma. Maybe we'll have three girls lol

Re: Baby names

  • DH and I have had names picked out for our future kids for a long while now. :)

If this one (!) is a girl, it will be Grace. We also love Sophie.  If it's a boy, it will be either Will(iam) or Jacob.

I also love the name Alexa because of that song.  Billy Joel is the shizz.

Both of my top name choices are because of songs.  My favorite song in the world is 'Hey Jude', and along with loving the movie Ben Hur, I've wanted to name my first boy Judah Benjamin.  Our first girl will be Alexandra Kay, after my favorite band's song 'Alex' and H's mom's middle name, Kay.

And I'm with your husband on your former name choice.  Please don't name your girl Kahlua.  Specific alcoholic beverages don't look good on resumes.

  • Yeah, I'm with Liz on the kahlua bit...

We are the opposite-we didn't really have a set name for LO until we actually had the baby in our arms. I'm pretty happy B is a girl because S and I weren't sold on our boy names... Basically, we had a few names that we liked and once we saw the kiddo we made our decision. Anders was going to be graham, but when we had him he just seemed more like an Anders.

I like Zoe, and I like Alexa-it is more popular if that's a concern. And I totally 2nd loving billy Joel. I know someone who just named her son Jude in part because of her love for Hey Jude as well

Grace is our top pick for a girl, too! My only reservation is that I am super clumsy, to the point that my grandfather used to jokingly call me Grace when I was a kid. So I'm worried that if my (mythical, future) daughter takes after me, the name might be a bit more ironic than we intended. For a boy, we love Noah.

Other names I love but DH isn't sure about: Theresa with nickname Tessa (I love Tessa and Theresa is my grandmother's name), or Emma (which I have loved since I was in elementary school but is so popular now I'm not sure I could do it), Miles.

As for your names, I have to agree with the other ladies that I probably wouldn't do Kahlua. But, I do like Alexa, Zoe, and of course, Emma.

  • I love Miles, but DH won't go for it. And I am with the other ladies on Kahlua.  No.  Alexa, Zoe, and Emma are all nice, though. :)

  • Our child is currently nameless and probably will be until he/she is born. I've always had names I liked, but T has shot them all down. We currently agree on like 2 girl names and 2 boy names, but I'm not really sold on them. So like I said, this baby is just "Baby" or "Jellybean." I love Alexa, it's been one of my favorites for a while, but it's one T shot down. I guess we'll just be waiting for the day he/she is born and have to see our baby and what fits them before deciding.

I have to agree with the others though, please don't name your child Kahlua Courtny. Being named after a brand of alcohol is just not a grown up, put on a resume type of thing. And the spelling of Courtny just bugs me.

  • As a teacher I implore you to not name your child after an alcoholic beverage. Honestly, I equate it with emotional abuse.

  • I agree with everyone else on not naming a child after alcohol. If you like the sound of Kahlua, we have a girl at school named Callula which I think is a pretty alternative.

We've always got names that we bounce around. Lately though we've been more into tossing around ideas for a potential dog than a child.

  • I agree with disliking Kahlua (but like Reenies alternative better) and with Yvonne in that the spelling of Courtny seems off, needs an "e" in there.

That being said.  Name your kids whatever you want.  I know a lot of people dislike the name Mackenzie, but we like it so we went with it.

I do think you need to be conscious of unfortunately "nick names" or jokes that can be made of their names though to try to save them from a little bit of unnecessary teasing when they get to school.

As for naming the kid before or after you see them when they are born.  I told B that I didn't want to say 100% for the name until I saw her in case I thought differently.  Honestly, when I saw her she looked like a baby to me.  No one name stood out as "that's gotta be her name".  I more-so think that kids grow into their names.

  • I'm pretty sure I've said this before, but in punching holes in our school IDs last year, I ran across a girl with the name of Tequila Baby (Last Name).  Ishityounot.

The suggestion of Callula is actually really pretty.  It sounds like Telulah, and is 'younique' in a very beautiful way.  And I'm not one to really like unique names, so I'm surprised by the reaction I had to it!

  • I agree with the others about the name but I also agree with "its your child, name them what you want". We.were set on Julian, had a family drama happen, went with Lucas instead. I'm so happy we did because he is such a Lucas. We like other names which include: Liam, Jackson, Landry, Sawyer, Emma, peyton (girl), Sophia, and I think that's it.

I love Miles too! Lance isn't crazy about it.

If this baby is a boy, my plan is to name him Marshall David. Lance is still getting used to it but he doesn't hate it and hasn't suggested anything else.

The other name we like for a boy is Sawyer, and it is has strange story behind it... a couple weeks ago a man named Sawyer Johnson (last name?) was accused of shooting too RCMP officers after fleeing the scene when they came to confiscate guns from his uncle's farm. He eventually turned himself in. Anyways, as it turns out, my brother in law was in the same class as him in elementary school, so we were all looking through his class pictures at MIL's house looking for pictures. Finally after a while I said 'Maybe this is bad timing, but I really like the name Sawyer...' Lance said 'yes, very bad timing' but later admitted that he liked the name too. I seriously doubt we'll use it, but I thought it was worth sharing lol.

For a girl we still like Lydia Anne. We had been trying to get away from it but keep coming back to it, so I think it is meant to be (If we have a girl).

I'm so sorry Lena, but Kahlua sounds like a stripper IMHO. I agree with Liz that it would not look good on a resume.
