Hot Springs/Little Rock & surrounding areas
Does anyone have suggestions of things to do/places to eat in Hot Springs, Little Rock, or the surrounding areas? We're doing a mini-getaway for spring break.
Thanks!
Re: Hot Springs/Little Rock & surrounding areas
Little Rock-
We ate at this great BBQ place that was rated #1 on TA- it was scary looking when we pulled up and I joked that they had bought the trophies, but really good- Whole Hog Cafe.
For dinner we ate at Sonny William's Steak Room- It was just okay.
The Bill Clinton Library was interesting.
Loved visiting The Old Mill-last standing structure from Gone With the Wind, which can be seen in the credits.
Hot Springs-
We only passed through- did note eat there.
Downtown had a very touristy type feel- plenty of fudge, popcorn, and old fashioned photos.
The alligator farm was equal parts horrifying and entertaining- I enjoyed it.
I really wanted to visit one of the spas, but did not have time.
I can second Whole Hog Cafe. And I can recommend The Flying Fish for seafood.
I really enjoyed the Clinton Presidential Library, much more than I thought I would. And in the same complex is Heifer Village -- the headquarters of the charity Heifer International. I wanted to see that as well, but ran out of time.
I haven't really been to Hot Springs since I was a child, and then we did mainly free things. I know there is a self-guided tour of a couple of the Bath Houses which is interesting.
Another vote for the Whole Hog Cafe. DH had the 3 meat platter and I had a bbq potato. It was fantastic. Their ribs are a bit different as they have a glaze on them.
Also, we ate at Ashley's at the Capitol Hotel. It was fabulous! We did the Chef's Tasting Menu. There is a small kitchen shop in one of the hip neighborhoods in Little Rock and we asked the owner there where to eat and she recommended this. It also comes up on TripAdvisor and many other sites about Little Rock restaurants.
We decided since there isn't all that much to actually do in Little Rock that they eat a lot because they had a plethora of restaurants to choose from and most of them seemed really good when we read the reviews, looked at the menus, etc... We were very pleasantly surprised.
The Clinton Library is most definitely worth a visit. I could have spent a few more hours in there. Also, we did visit Heifer Int'l and took a tour of their HQ. It was interesting and gave us something extra to do.
Hot Springs
* Go in the Mountain Tower and see the area from above
* McClard's BBQ
* Garvan Woodland Gardens - walking trails with lots of photo ops of flowers, waterfalls
* We always go horseback riding in the mountains, usually go to Lake Catherine State Park Stables
* We don't do the bath houses, but for spas, we use Ablution Day Spa and they also own a great bed and bath called Butler Manor
* There is a wax museum that is kind of fun
