Etsy needs to be a line item in my budget!

My time has been so tight lately that etsy and I have been very good friends!  Even though I can make almost everything I bought, I realized that I don't WANT to spend my time on those items.  I'd rather pay someone else to do it and save my little free time making stuff I want to :)  Besides, for the low prices some of the sellers charge, I wouldn't really save any money by making it myself!  (That is how I am justifying it!!)

No real point in this post, just realized how much I have bought off etsy lately (between LA's bday, Easter stuff, etc.).

  • I know what you mean! I was looking at little sweaters for the girls. I couldn't believe people where selling them $10 to $15. It blew my mind. The hair bows.........Seriously, How are these people making money?

    .

Hairbows cost very little to make. If you buy clips in bulk online (I found an ebay auction for 100 clips for $4.99 + $3.75 shipping, so that'd be about $.08 a clip) and you buy ribbon in bulk (I can find solid color rolls at Wal-Mart in the $1 bin sometimes, but otherwise they 1.5" rolls at JoAnn's are $3.49), they're really not too expensive.

I hate that some people don't include their time in the cost. Sure, a bow is fast, but I'm still spending time doing it. Charging $3 a bow means there's like no time charge in there.

I've seen bows on there for a $1 a piece. I guess they aren't charging for time at all. :(

Drives me NUTS! I make them to sell and if I don't charge a little for time, I'd be crazy.

  • I am the same way. I saw a really cute tutu thing and while I could probably make it, to me right now it is worth just paying the money to buy it instead of making it. Sometimes your time is more important.

It's just hard to convince DH of that when I have a room full of supplies :)

But, I get home before he does so he doesn't see all the UPS, USPS, FedEx boxes hehehehe!

I read somewhere that this is the biggest mistake a lot of crafters make.

I used to make jewelry (when I actually had the time) and pricing my work was always a problem for me. It just felt really weird and I'd always end up underpricing. I didn't sell too many peices anyway, I'd always end up giving them away to friends and family!
