Anyone giving up anything for Lent?
I have thought about giving up Facebook, but I know I'll fail. I think I am going to give up surfing the internet in the evenings...so that I can focus on other things like craft projects, reading books, exercising, etc. I think I'm also going to give up chocolate since I've been a chocolate fiend lately. My Easter basket will never be so delicious!
Re: Anyone giving up anything for Lent?
I was rasied with the whole give something up at Lent idea, until I was a young adult and had this great conversation with a priest at my church. He talke about wanting to shift to thoughts of doing something to be like Christ, instead of taking something away. Like commeting to so many hours of family time, or working a food kitchen, or reading the Bible each night. I like that so much better and that is what I have done for the past 10 years or so. I am not sure what I will do yet, Lent snuck up on me.
we are doing the 40 bag in 40 day challenge.
i'm also giving up french fries.
This is the exact same thing that one of our priests said a few years back and so now as I've become an adult, I've made Lent more about giving rather than giving up. A few years ago I volunteers a few times throughout Lent at a soup kitchen and another year made casseroles and sandwhiches. This year I want to focus on prayer. Prayers for others, praying for myself, praying for those I don't know...but the whole central theme for Lent for me is definitely prayer.
I LOVE this idea!
This is something I've been trying to find. A church that I and my family can belong to. I want to also raise my kid in church, but want to stick with Catholic but I'd be willimg to try something else.
ETA: meant to quote MrsBecky
I like this. I think I'll try and do both.
Someone's getting a little brother!
Seriously look into the 40 bags in 40 days challenge.
It will help rid your house of clutter and also help those in need when you donate your things. It's the perfect thing for a family to undertake. DD will be responsible for clearing out several bags of toys from her toy area.
I usually alternate between giving something up and doing something. I would love to give up FB but I have to use it for my job and it would be too difficult to avoid the personal aspect. This entire year I am going to try to give up FB one weekend a month...
So I was originally thinking I was going to say something nice (and genuine) to my husband every day, but I have decided to branch out and say/do something nice or thoughtful for someone I care about each day. This will force me to reach out and call my grandmother, etc.
