Opinions please!

If for the past few weeks you heard/felt a very loud "jackhammering" type of sound followed by metal clanging coming from somewhere in your neighborhood happening in the evening would you call the police?  The noise is so loud it shakes the windows. Yesterday I finally did.   I said "I don't want to be all noise complainy, but I have a baby that goes to sleep at 7."  I explained when I called that the noise was happening between 6 and 8 basically every day.  I called right at 8 so I told them in may be a lost cause for them to come out to find where the noise is coming from.  They came out anyways, and said they would look into it.  They could hear the metal clanging then, but the jackhammering noise had stopped.

Anyways today I heard it so I went for a walk to figure out where it was coming from.  I found the house.  It is this old run down house in the neighborhood...you know the type with all junk in the yard.  So I came home, and decided I would try to look up their phone number to call them.  I figured I would ask them politely to stop jackhammering or whatever it is (DH thinks they are cutting up metal)  at a reasonable hour...explain to them that it is causing our windows to shake.  I googled the address and saw that the house is in foreclosure.  DH thinks we shouldn't say anything now since presumably they are not going to be there for much  longer.  What do you think?

Re: Opinions please!

  • Your DH is probably right.

But I would call in a noise complaint anyway.

  • The foreclosure notice says that they will be barred on February 27th...so that is only a few days away.  I am wondering though about how that works???  Like is someone actually going to make sure they move out?  I think foreclosure is a pretty long process.  If it is only five more days I could live with it...
  • It is my understanding that just because they're foreclosed next week definitely doesn't mean they'll be out then. It's a long process, and it's hard to get people to actually leave.

But these people are probably pissed (well, obviously, since they're apparently jackhammering the house to bits before leaving) so I don't think I would speak to them. I think I'd just keep filing noise complaints.

  • I wouldn't contact them directly.  Next time you hear it, call the police again and tell them you figured out the source of the noise.  Let them handle it and keep yourself anonymous.

This is what I would do.  GL!

  • What LadyE and BB said - I don't think you should try to contact or confront them yourselves. Since the police already know definitely call them back when the noise starts and give them the address.

  • You guys are right!  So far no noise tonight so I am wondering if the police figured out it was them, and asked them to stop.
