Why does my left hip hurt after a run?

I ran 5.5 miles on Saturday and my lower back and left hip area hurt (dull achy pain on and off all day).

yesterday I ran 3 miles during lunch at a track and all day and still today there is a pain that is coming from my left hip but in the back. It kind of feels like siatica but does not have the pain continuing down the leg.

I'm not sure why, but have you tried foam rolling? It has really worked wonders for my aches and pains after running.

It sounds like it could be a piriformis issue, but I'm not a doctor/PT.

What does your stretching routine look like? How about hydration/electrolyte replacement habits?

Hydrating is typically water ( I drink up to 3 liters per day) as well as a watered down cranberry juice. When I have longer runs (7+ miles) I have GU packs and drink Gatoraid post run.

I do lack on my off training days for stretching. I think I am going to get a foam roller this weekend. Thanks!

Are you strength training? In addition to rolling and stretching, building muscle strength will help with any piriformis or IT issues.

yes. I do Pilates 2x a week and 2 HIIT classes a week as well.

I mean weight lifting. My PT told me I need to lift weights to build up my glutes, quads and hamstrings and also do more core work (which it sounds like you're doing in Pilates) to help balance my body. It works for me...when I'm lifting regularly, I don't have pain or irritation.

Yes I do weights after the HIIT session, so 2x a week.

I've had similar pains, and for me it's been piriformis/glute medius issues. A figure 4 stretch helps a lot, and my favorite yoga pose is pigeon (http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/863), which gives me an awesome stretch through those areas. Good luck!
