another "help us find a vacation spot" post...

Just saw the post below asking for vacation help...but ours is a different scenario so perhaps you ladies have some great ideas?!

We're about to take a 3 day vacation to Houston for the rodeo but have nothing planned beyond that & I desparatley need something to look forward to:)

We would like to travel this fall, probably September/October but that's not firm...

We live in Colorado & own/operate a restaurant. DH golfs & will want to on vacation...Really good food is a must. Kid friendly (our daughter is 1 1/2).

We typically leave on a Sunday afternoon & return Thursday evening or Friday morning. We can't be gone any longer than that:(

In the past 6 years we've been to:

DisneyWorld (3 times)

Puerta Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas & Zihautenejo

Napa Valley

Italy & France

Alaska (ketchikan, seward, denali, anchorage, fairbanks)

Sante Fe

San Antonio

New York (we lived there)

Nashville, Louisville

Yellowstone

Vegas (about 2-3 times a year)

Budget- $5000 (we have air miles on delta, united & southwest so flying is free)

ANY ideas are greatly appreciated. TIA:)

  • Maui?

It's a hairy long flight but I think there are a couple direct from Denver flights (to Oahu) or you could break it up on Delta or United with a LAX or SFO layover.

DH is a huge golfer and this was perfect for us. He'd get the first tee time (he basically stayed on east coast time) of the day while I'd sleep in, get a light breakfast, lounge by the pool and basically just relax (MY idea of a good time). They we'd both be ready for the day by 11ish.

    Bermuda?

    Key West?

    We LOVE Key West:)

But I forgot to put that on the list of recently visited spots...we were there last July & the April before that.

    I've never been to Bermuda...

  • Hilton Head/Charleston SC - great food in Charleston and Hilton Head has a ton of golf.  Savannah is nearby too.  Maybe Kiawah Island - haven't been but it is also near Charleston.
  • Another vote for Hawaii. According to a couple golfers I know who have lived in Hawaii the Big Island has the best courses.

DH also said BI had best courses.

Hilton has a bigass resort there that is very kid-focused. It's right in the middle of a a bunch of resorts with multiple golf courses, Roy's (we didn't eat there but it's supposed to be awesome) and some other great, more casual dining options.

We have thought about Hawaii but our time constraint kind of eliminates it as a possiblility. 4-5 days (including 2 full days of travel) isn't enough time:(

  • Second Charleston/Savannah.  Both cities are beautiful with plenty to see/do and fantastic food.  I'm not a golfer but I know there is golfing around Hilton Head.
  • I agree with PPs--Bermuda is perfect for a 4-5  day vacation.

Also, Charleston/Savannah or the outer banks area.

You could also do somewhere in New England--go to Boston for a few days and then go to a resort on Cape Cod (if it is Sept--Oct would be cold). There are tons of nice resorts on the Cape and lots of good restaurants.

  • Aruba? Clearwater/St. Petes?

I am interested in doing Hilton Head one day but there is no way I would do the drive to Savannah and Charleston with a little one, in another post someone said it is an hour to one and 2 hours to the other...that would be a 4 hour round trip and no way to do that for dinner!

  • September is a great time of year to rent a lake house in Northern Michigan.  The water is finally warm!  :)   You can rent a pontoon boat or speed boat.  There are plenty of places to golf.  Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes is GREAT for little kids and so beautiful.  Maybe a resort like this one?   And/or you could head up to Mackinac Island as well and stay in the famous Grand Hotel.  Mackinac Island is a really quaint and charming island that we love to visit.
