Have to re-schedule our trips. Suggestions please?

So I guess DH's birthday trip will not happen since he wants to see the Yankees/Tigers here in NYC, and that series happens over the weekend.

So that means instead of 3 weeklong vacations this year, we get two (yes, I know we're really lucky to a) have that much time off and b) be able to afford the vacations). Anyway, we're tossing around ideas for our fall trip - which will be the end of October/beginning of November.

For about a week and a budget of, say $3500, where would you go? Our guidelines are:

We have already been to the Bahamas, Mexico (2x), Canada (east and west), Madrid, Costa Rica, Belize, so we'd like to not go to any of those countries.

We want to use our passports

Activity required - we don't like lounging on the beach, and can only do it for maybe an afternoon. We'll bike, surf, scuba, and because we live in NYC, can walk for hours on end.

No all-inclusives

And if we can avoid election coverage that would kind of be nice. We've managed to vacation out of the country each election year during Election Week and it's nice to not watch all the political BS that is on TV.

ETA: I realized Madrid is not a country. Just in case anyone wants to correct me on that. Madrid is a city, and I'm open to going to Spain, like Valencia, Barcelona, etc.

I swim because I'm too damned sexy for a sport that requires real clothing.

  • rome is awesome that time of year! non-stop flights to and from JFK, easy to city center from airport via train (only one stop from airport to termini) and it's more off season so you'll have less people and better hotel prices.

i stayed at the albergo del senato (overlooks pantheon) 3 weeks ago and loved it. you could probably do a week there for 3500.

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • With a week, the time of year you are interested in traveling, and assuming you can get a direct flight out of NY, I would recommend the following:

    • Seville/Andalucia/Cordoba/Granada
    • Rome/Amalfi Coast
    • Istanbul/Cappadocia
    • Buenos Aires and 1 other area in Argentina (i.e. Mendoza/Iguaza Falls/etc)
    • Rio de Janerio and 1 other area in Brazil
    • Puerto Rico
    • Guatemala (Antigua/Tikal/etc)
    • Nicaragua (Granada/Leon/Isla Ometepe/San Juan del Sur)
  • I don't think you can do either BsAs or Rio, much less those places plus somewhere else, on your budget. The RT flights alone will probably be over $2000, and flying within South America, especially Brazil, isn't cheap.

Guatemala however I think is a great suggestion as are the European suggestions.

  • Honduras/Roatan

    Panama

Iceland (I keep suggesting this to everyone because I really want to go there, lol)
