Ugh, I remember now why I stopped reading the news

Rock Santorum charges that the law requiring insurers to cover [prenatal testing] is a way to encourage more women to have abortions that will "cull the ranks of the disabled in our society."

Yes, because women only select the testing to decide if there is a reason to get an abortion Confused How about: pre-natal testing can save neo-natal lives with early detection of a problem that can be corrected prior to birth?  OR it gives the future parents time to educate themselves in regards to a caring for a child with a birth defect and to select the best hospital equipped to handle the birth.

I have a friend with a daughter born about a month after C - during their early screenings it was detected that the little girl was going to be born with a hole in her skull (ie brain matter exposed).  Mom and dad did not choose to abort, they chose to prepare themselves as best they could beforehand.  The early detection also let them prepare for the type of birth required and have a team set up at the best children's hospital.  Of course that's just 1 example.

Then I read this:

Assembly Republicans gave preliminary support for a bill that would prevent people subjected to employment discrimination from seeking punitive damages in state court...a setback for women who do not receive the same pay as men who do the same jobs..."This bill would let employers who discriminate off the hook by eliminating the penalties for discrimination."

Okay so there would no longer be any deterrents to fight workplace discrimination.  Employers would only be required to pay workers backpay owed to them [ie wages they would have rightfully earned anyway] court fees, and lawyer fees...that's it.

  • I saw this the other day.

My response (to take a different angle completely) is that prenatal testing, while may idendify and lead some to choose abortion, I think ultimately eases minds and allows parents to prepare for what's at hand, like you said.

On the complete other hand, (I'm probably going to get flamed for even thinking this way), preventing prenatal testing and requiring each woman to bring a child into the world with [possible] severe birth defects and/or health issues has the potential to strain today's healthcare system.

  • No flames from me Brit! Not every couple who chooses to have a child is not able to be financially prepared to take on a special needs child ... The politicians cut government assistance programs all the time and I have no doubts that the same who oppose mothers making the choice to abort would also cut the assistance programs to help them if they would choose to carry to term. Then add the point that Amanda made on FB that moms who work are seen as selfish, you know, instead of earning income to help ease the financial needs for said child ... Ugh! So screwed up!!

  • Ridiculous.

Not only does having a special needs child have financial implications, it has a TON of emotional implications. Same for "unwanted" babies. Sigh.

And personal gratification is for men only. Remember?

  • Regardless of how you feel about abortions/pre-natal testing, I don't see how anyone could vote for this guy with such stupidity rolling out of his mouth. What an extremely generalized statment he made there. I love how people can take facts and just manipulate and distort them to support their own beliefs. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
