Re: UO Thursday

  • Ash Wednesday. I have no issue with people going to church and getting their ashes on.  I just find it ridiculous to see people showing up to an evening tennis drill with smudged ashes on their forehead, sweating profusely as that gray mess runs down their face.  I think some people do like to draw attention to themselves.

Semi-related: what's the deal with Lent? I mean, I know what it is, but a high percentage of people I know have commented about what they're doing/giving up for Lent, and I know that something like 75% of them aren't Catholic.

Agreed! Like, really? Is this a popular thing? I feel as though most of the people who do this, do it for the "comments" on FB. Sad...

  • This isn't really an UO, but I need to rant. I really dislike those pregnant people who insist on telling FB every single bad symptom they have. They never say the good! Just the bad! Yes I had a baby, yes I had bad symptoms, but most of my status updates were positive. I feel as though, if you are going to b**ch about pregnancy everyday on FB, maybe you shouldn't have gotten knocked up!

    Lady, we need to meet!!

More than just Catholics "celebrate" Lent. I am Lutheran and we celebrate Ash Wednesday, Maudy Thursday, etc etc just as Catholics do.  It isn't just a "Catholic" thing.

Agreed. On that note, a FB friend deleted me the other day--I'm assuming because she didn't like my comments on her "hoping for a Valentine baby!!!!" post. Her son is due March 10....she's a smart one.

I also think it should be a requirement that the people who sell those weightloss shakes that are all the rage right now know the difference between "lose" and "loose". When someone posts about how much weight you can "loose" and that you should contact them if you want to "loose" weight, I just can't take it seriously. I always want to respond with "as you LOSE weight, your clothes get LOOSE" Stick out tongue

  • Mine is pregnancy related too. I feel like I'm in a twilight zone over on thebump. I still go over there everyday, but I just don't understand half those ladies. Am I crazy to think that having a huge "baby belly" at 8 weeks is not a good thing? They are so proud of their early bellies and the ones without bumps are jealous. I'd like to hold off on getting fat as long as possible thank you very much. That's not to say I haven't gained a few pounds myself, but I'm not proudly flashing it around.

While some people do it to draw attention, I think most people do it for good reasons, or they just plain forget they have ashes on their forehead until they look in the mirror. I went to Ash Wednesday service over lunch, and nearly forgot that I had ashes until I was getting ready to get walk back into work. It's supposed to be a visible sign of the call to penance and humbling oneself, so I felt bad wiping them off but didn't want people asking me about them all day.

I can't stand the constant pregnancy updates, period. I have posted about this pregnancy twice: once when we found out we were having a boy, and once with a baby shower photo.

I completely agree. I cannot stand the lose/loose confusion. They SOUND different, people!

  • I didn't realize people didn't know that non-Catholic religions recognize Lent. I obviously don't, but I respect those who participate in it. H is Catholic but doesn't, and never has.
