Update on the sex offender

Here's the original post:  http://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/63673080.aspx

I was very disturbed about this obviously and reported his profile and nothing happened (it is still up).  I decided to take to Twitter to try to get their attention and sent 3 tweets before they replied (it was plenty of fish).  They did say that if I sent them the user name and "proof" that they would take his profile down.  I sent his name and a link to the sex offender registry.  So hopefully they will take it down.

What I learned from this when dating online:  always always always google a guy before you go out with him.  Check the national sex offender registry too.  Here's the link:  http://www.fbi.gov/scams-safety/registry

Also, some things do not come up on google.  I dated a man with a record of domestic assault.  This will not come up on google.  But you can run a search pretty easily if you just google the website for the criminal court in your county.  If it happened in another county though you won't be able to find it.  (I don't know if anyone has another suggestion?)

I'm honestly not trying to scare anyone away from dating and particularly online dating.  In some ways dating online is safer than meeting someone in a bar or really anywhere before you do have the power of google.  The other thing I found out in this process is that match does in fact run their users against the national sex offender registry after there was a lawsuit filed against them.  Details here  http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/match-agrees-conduct-sex-offender-screenings-settle-lawsuit/story?id=14372981

Also, I don't know if he was convicted of a crime against and adult or a child but I can't help but wonder if he targeted me because I have a young son.  I took that information out of my profile (I still say "yes" to do you have children, I just don't mention him)

ETA:  Eharmony & Zoosk also screen for sex offenders.  I guess you get what you pay for with POF

Re: Update on the sex offender

  • OK I don't really know anything but is it against the law to be on a dating website if you are a sex offender?

  • Glad you did something about it.  I also just spent the last half hour perusing it to make sure no one near me is on it.

Yea, me too... none near me but my brother's next door neighbor is on there and it was a crime against a child.  I doubt highly that my brother knows this.  He (my brother, not the neighbor) babysits for my son and my nieces and nephews all the time too.  Great.  At least we know now

  • How do you Google them if you don't have their whole name? When I was dating, it would be a couple dates or so before I would "friend" them on FB.

In my opinion, you should know enough about them before /right after the first date to google them...i don't think I'd friend anyone until I know it was exclusive.

I just ask them their last name.  With this guy though he offered me his personal email address which included his last name.  I wasn't actually even going to go out with him I just googled him because I was bored.

  • Because of your OP, I have been warning every single friend. And we have been checking for everyone's name on the national sex offender list.

  • If the crime was against an underage person it would say so on the registry. Very scary either way.
