Will your ob-gyn see you for a yearly if you have your period?

I have an appointment on Friday morning and of course, I get my period this morning. I called to cancel my appointment but they said no, he sees you anyway. I always thought that they didn't, you had to cancel. I admit, I feel a little gross knowing I'm going to be sitting there, bleeding all over the table lol.

  • I've managed to schedule mine for when I have my period twice and they still saw me.  For me, it's slightly more uncomfortable, but not the end of the world.

Yeah that's kind of how I feel right now.

  • When I got my Mirena in it HAD to be right around the middle of my period.  I was so skeeved out by it.

But, I said to her, "I feel really bad.  I know it's how it has to be done, but it has to suck for you when people are on their period."

And you know what her answer was?  "Oh hun don't worry, you'd have to have something seriously wrong to gross me out at this point.  I've seen worse than a little blood."

ETA (and clarify): Don't worry, they really don't care.  And while it feels like you're bleeding out on the table, if you look at it realistically, how much can you bleed in the 15 minutes it takes?

ETAA: I just realized I've mentioned my Mirena twice in posts today.  Between my apparent love affair with my BC and the weird dietary habits I detailed yesterday I am making myself out to be a real winner.

LOL you are fine. A lot of people around here have a love affair with their Mirenas. Stop thinking you are weird!

  • I always thought they would reschedule too. Something about being more likely to get abnormal results? I guess I was wrong.
I agree with everything that muddled said. You should listen to her. -ESDReturns
  • Yes, but I don't think you can get a pap smear - you have to come back for that.

These people have seen a lot worse than a little menstrual fluid/blood!

  • I did before...got abnormal results BECAUSE of the period, had to re-do the pap and had to war w/ insurance to pay for it a 2nd time.
  • Yes but it will screw up a pap test so I'd reschedule unless you really love the speculum.

I had a period that interfered with my appt. last year and the reception said no can do to the period pap smear.

True story. Take aleve before you go, esd. Everything is going to hurt more.

I would also be pissed if I was told to come in anyhow and then told I had to re-schedule to have my pap. The whole purpose of calling beforehand is so that you don't have to show up twice. Grrrr.

Hmmmm I wonder if I should call back. I don't want to have to go in again.

  • I did not know this about the pap.  My doctor was fine doing one on the last day of my period... but probably because at that point there was minimal bleeding.

Based on this feedback, I'd reschedule.

  • Ob/gyns are surgeons by training. They love blood. YWIA.
  • It doesn't mess up the pap.  They told me it used to with the old technology which used slides, but now with the new technology they can spin the blood off the sample before submitting.  whatever that means

  • Yep. Mine doesn't care.

  • Mine won't if you have your period, they specifically ask when the appointment is set up.

LOL well considering I have to schedule mine 3 months in advance, that doesn't work. I called twice and they told me to come. So I will I guess even though I feel slightly uncomfortable about it. However, who knows when they could get me in again and I don't really want to put it off.

Ah! My doctor's office calls for a reminder a month before the appt to see where you are in your cycle and they'll adjust the appointment then if needed. And yes, better to get in and be seen at least, guess you'll find out when your doc starts the pap. lol!

  • Mine won't see you if you have your period.
