(NSOR) Anyone live in a studio apartment?

If so, how does it suit you?  How do you make it work?  Places I'm looking at are mostly in the 400-450 sq ft range, and I'm scared it's going to feel like a postage stamp.

Re: (NSOR) Anyone live in a studio apartment?

  • I lived in 400 sq ft in law school and it was fine.  I'm not a big homebody though.  I was often out with friends, studying at school or dating someone who lived in a bigger place and staying over.  Closet space was my biggest issue.

  • XH lived in a 2 room studio for a while when we first met. It was a bedroom/living room and separate kitchen. It honestly wasn't that bad. I think the biggest thing is not having too much stuff so it doesn't feel cramped.

  • I used to live in a studio that was around 300 square feet Big Smile  I tried to combine spaces as much as possible. You walked in the door and you saw the couch, a chair, and table. Instead of a coffee table I had a slightly low round dining room table. It doubled as a place to sit and entertain as well as a place to eat dinner and do homework (I was in school at the time). Next to that was my bed. At the end of the bed was my dresser. I pushed it against my bed so it was similar to a foot board. I just tried to combine uses where ever I could. I actually really loved that apartment. It was one of my favorite places. It didn't even feel cramped or anything.
  • Don't they have faux apartments at IKEA?

But your mom's cooking sounds awesome!  I'll move in if you move out.  ;)

I suppose I could just live at IKEA, but it might be awkward towards closing time...

I'm know I'm lucky to have supportive parents who let me move back in (my sister never left), and my mom does cook, but I am having a tough time living at home - especially since I'm in Centennial at the moment (which is 20-40 minutes from all fun things in Denver).  That said, the baked goods here are awesome, and I should probably stop complaining.

  • I think it all depends on how much stuff you have, what you are used to, and the layout. For me (and my 80 pound doggie) my 650 sq ft apartment feels tiny (to me) and its a one bedroom, not a studio. I will also add though that I had not lived in an apartment in about 7 years when I moved in, so I was used to 1000+ sq ft. But I think the biggest problem with my place is the layout - it has a sectioned off dining area which is dumb for such a small place and that would make it feel much bigger if the living area was both rooms.

In my imagination, I would love to have a show that is part IKEA part Glee.  But, I meant you could go check out the studio faux-partments to see how they feel.

I think, and you know this, you should pay off your car and save a good e-fund and get the heck out of there.  Not having financial worries will make the future and living in Denver way more fun.

And I'm not saying you should stop complaining.  I think it would be hard to go back, but you could set yourself up well for the future if you stick it out a bit longer.

  • My current rental is about 450 sq/ft. It's small, but it doesn't feel cramped, and I have to 55lb dogs. It has an open layout, but a separate bedroom. I guess it helps that I am a real minimalist with furniture (even when I had a bigger place) and I have a really big patio, so I keep the door open and the dogs have more space to roam.

I keep going back and forth about what I should do -- I still owe about $10k on my car, but in a couple weeks the last of my credit card debt will be paid and I can really start chipping away at it.  (How on earth my XH talked me into buying such an expensive car just a couple months before he left me, I'll never know...)  Anyway, I could feasibly live with my parents until my car is paid off (or close to it), but it's really hard to feel like I have 0 independence - I know I *should* stay until it's all paid, I just can't fathom it right now.

  • DH and I are living in a 500sq studio right now! We work a lot and are rarely home, but neither one of us hate it.

If we had friends over a lot then it would be different though!
