FL beach vaca w/ kids- driving from TX

Just started planning a Florida beach vaca for this July, driving from San Antonio, TX. I don't really know a lot about FL beaches. We probably want to stay in the northern section, either on the panhandle (gulf) or Atlantic side.... but staying north to reduce driving time.

We're looking for nice beaches with calm water for my daughter, and golf is a MUST! We would also like to go to someplace "reasonable" if possible, where we might get a "bang for our buck." :) Most of our friends from TX drive and vaca in the Destin area and that is certainly a possibility.

We also have friends that rave about St. Augustine and it seems like a very reasonable place to visit. 3 bd condos are less than $2K for a week.

We are looking to rent a 3-4 bedroom house or condo. Basically, I'm just looking for some ideas and beaches to begin researching.

Thanks!

  • I'd go somewhere between Pensacola Beach and Destin/Sandestin. I love the white sandy beaches and there are a range of places to stay. There are two really nice golf courses in Sandestin. In the height of summer for your price range in Destin/Sandestin area you might have to stay a little further away from the beach.

  • We drove to Destin from Houston last summer (no kids yet, I was 20 weeks pregnant) and it took about 10 hours.  We hit some heavy rain and stopped to eat lunch on the way.  We stayed at Sandpiper Cove and we loved it.  They have condos of all sizes, but ours was a 1 bedroom and had a pull out queen sofa and doors to the living room.  Will definitely be back.  Here's a link to my review on tripadvisor:

  • I spent 40 years living in FL (panhandle and Atlantic coast). The nicest beaches are in the panhandle. Saint Augustine has great history but similar to the Spanish missions and forts of Texas. The extra hours diving is probably not worth it unless you want to see your friends there.
