Using the space above the cupboards

We're living in a little apartment with a little kitchen, so a bunch of my stuff has been relegated to the space above the kitchen cabinets, which is totally ugly even when it's organized. I mostly have my less frequently used appliances up there, like the popcorn popper, as well as the mixing bowls that are too big to fit in the cupboards and the nice china that we don't use so much. Any thoughts on how to make it prettier?

Re: Using the space above the cupboards

  • If you displayed your china up there, would that free up the cabinet space you would need for the appliances?

  • I have the china above the cabinets on one side and the appliances on the other. Neither will fit in the cabinets.

  • What about some decorative boxes or baskets up there? You might have to lay the appliances on their sides to get them to fit, but at least the containers would hide the ugly metal and cords. Also, you could mix up the china and baskets/boxes around the whole kitchen instead of one sort of stuff on each side.

This was the only other option that came to my mind...

Yeah I agree with this too. I was thinking about those cubes that are so popular right now.. I just don't know how big the things you are talking about are.

Here is a picture of what I'm talking about:

Now that I think about this.. I might get some for mine too, we live in an apartment and we have the same issue with storage in the kitchen.

  • I have my baking pans above the cabinets which in turn frees ups the cabinets for other things

  • I have baskets on top of my cabinets where I store small appliances (crock pot, food processor, etc.).

  • Have you thought about hanging some curtains to cover the space above the cabinets? Something like in the link below but above the cabinets instead of below. You might be able to just staple some type of cloth to the ceiling if you dont want to hang rods.

  • I like the idea about putting decorative boxes and such up there, but maybe get some inexpensive strands of greenery and thread it throughout the appliances also.
