I am pretty sure that there is a post somewhere on here, but I couldn't find it.
DH and I are looking at switching banks (we currently have WF) but we aren't sure which is better- should we just stick with Wells Fargo?
We currently just have a savings and checking accounts but we want to add an IRA and an extra account for his day trading.
We have heard bad things about WF, but haven't really heard anything about USAA so what are your thoughts?
Thanks!
Re: USAA vs Wells Fargo
We just have USAA now and have no problems with it.
I held on to BoA for awhile because I was wanting to have a branch bank, but I didn't really find the need for that, and I was holding on to an account to basically pay fees every month, so it was quite silly.
The are super helpful and awsome.
I changed my name
Ditto USAA. I had WF but switched almost everything to USAA. USAA is one of the only banks that doesn't have fees. They have the best service I have come by, but they dont have any branches. Switching to an online bank was not as scary or big of a hassle as I thought it was.
The only reason I keep my WF is because I have a direct deposit from a retirement and inheritence account that is a PITA to switch. I also have a CC for JIC emergencies. WF does have a ton of fees but they were able to work with me to make it work but I think it's because I've had my accounts for so long and use to work there.
I would also note that you're not going to be able to link any WF accts with USAA. I only have 1 IRA with USAA but we love that we can have do everything imaginable with USAA (AUTO/Renters/Home Insurance etc).
My FI's account with Wells Fargo is grandfathered in, so we'll never pay fees on keeping it open, so we're going to just so we have a 'brick-and-mortar' bank. And-plus-also he has a credit card with them that he doesn't want to close as it has only like 7% APR and he's had it for almost a decade.
Meanwhile, the rest of our accounts are being switched to USAA. USAA's customer service beats WF every time - the one thing that really got us was that USAA will refund up to $15 per month for ATM transaction fees, anywhere in the world, and if you have linked accounts and one overdrafts, they won't charge you fees. We had over $15k in Wells Fargo checking & savings accounts but did some bad math and ended up overdrawing by like $5 on one account, and they knocked us $35 immediately and wouldn't refund it. That pisses me off.
I'd pay attention to that account because WF doesn't grandfather you in. What they do is switch some drop down menus/options to waive the fee. For instance I've had an account there since working there years and years ago.... (I had a CC, 2 checking and 1 savings) I closed one of the checking since it was a wedding account... once I did that my current checking was no longer free but because I had their min. balance and a Direct Deposit it worked and I met their requirements to waive the fees. (It's an either/or type system). Does that make any sense???
USAA so totally rocks in every way imaginable.
Their customer service is amazing. You will talk to a real person every single time, and they are incredibly friendly and helpful, and make everything easy.
I will say that when it comes to car insurance, they aren't always the cheapest. Depending on your driving history and what state you live in, you might be able to find the coverage you need for MUCH less than what USAA will charge you (I once paid half through Progressive), so it's worth doing some price comparison. However, if it's within about 15-20%, I'd probably just stick with USAA because they are so easy to work with, and their customer service is worth paying a little bit more, especially for something like insurance which can be a huge hassle if you ever have to make a claim.
Okay so,
I did some research and there isn't any USAA near us, should we still switch even though there isn't any branches near us?
Thanks!
As far as I know USAA doesn't have ANY branches. They are all online. But with most accounts you can deposit checks at home or via mobile. They also allow you to deposit checks via a UPS store.
TBH I haven't really noticed not having a branch (after figuring out how to get my money from WF to USAA).
