Tell me about Portland Oregon

Thinking about going to Portland in July with my husband. Must see? Restaurant recs? Fun things to do? We are on somewhat of a budget btw. TIA.

Re: Tell me about Portland Oregon

  • July is a great time to come to Portland.  The weather varies so much though, ot could be in the 70's and sprinkly, or could be in the high 90's.  Most likely it will be low 80's and gorgeous.

How low is your budget?  What kinds of things do you like to do?  Are you a foodie?  How long will you be here?

  • There's a good Blues Festival over 4th of July. We've gone to that the past 2 years and only got drizzled on once.

  • Well, we really don't have a set budget but we have alot of things coming up so I would like to keep it as low as possible. The hotel we rented is called Hotel deLuxe..good or no??

We are HUGE foodies and really love to do just about anything. We will be there from July 5-9 but plan on taking a day trip one of those days to drive out to Cannon Beach.

DeLuxe is nice, and in a good spot for tourists!

For breakfast, one day go to Mother's Bistro (try to go on a weekday, and be prepared to wait, but the wait is worth it!)

My favorite food is at Andina (Peruvian) and Oba (really fancy Spanish tapas, great happy hour on their outside patio).  You'll want reservations at either place if you are having dinner in the dining room.

The Foodie place that I always hear rec's for is Beast, but I've never eaten there.

One thing that is "very Portland" is to walk around the NW 23rd Avenue and look at all the fun shops and boutiques.  There are also a million restaurants there, I'd eat pizza at Escape from New York (a cheap hole in the wall place) and then walk up and down the street and later on have dessert at Papa Haydn's (amazing and romantic!!).

The Portland City Grill is another great place to go for happy hour.  If you go on a weekday, I'd get there about 20-30 minutes before HH starts, so you can get a table.  It gets VERY packed up there and people are very vulcher-like for tables.  It's also a wonderful place for dinner, but it's expensive and it's not a "must eat dinner there" place, in my opinion.  But the bar is nice, has a live piano, great view, strong drinks, and great snacky food.

For Cannon Beach, I like the Lumberyard for lunch, and the SurfSand Resort (I personally think you should stay overnight and have a bonfire on the beach, watch the sunset, and then drive back to Portland the next morning)

You'll want to visit Multnomah Falls (30 minutes East of downtown, on Highway 84), it's a huge waterfall and a very pretty, easy, hike (you can do it in flip flops).

The International Rose Test Gardens will be in full bloom at that point and they are GORGEOUS!  Bring a packed lunch and your camera and have a little picnic overlooking the city.

Let me know if you have any specific questions!

  • You MUST eat breakfast at Beast. Best breakfast meal of my life! We also really liked Toro Bravo, Bamboo Sushi, and The Waffle Window. We wanted to go to Tasty N'Sons but it was closed during the morning we tried to visit.

I have two entries in my blog on Portland. One is on sightseeing and the other is on the restaurants we ate it/hotel/nightlife: http://wanderlusttraveler.blogspot.com/search/label/Oregon

  • We went to Andina for the first time this past fall and it was really good!  Get a pisco sour!  :)

For Cannon Beach I love Pig'n'Pancake for breakfast (mostly because they have the best fried ham ever, but they aren't fancy by any means) and you can never go wrong with Mo's.

  • Thanks for all the great suggestions ladies. I appreciate it!
