Okay, I have spent countless hours reading all of your blogs, they are amazing. I am beyond jealous, so I need your help! My husband and I want to take a one week vacation or more, if we can afford it, this August. A little background, I am 24 and he is 28. In August we will have been married for one year. In the past year we have gone to Outer Banks, NC, Las Vegas, St. Louis, Antigua, Dallas, Austin, Houston, and a cruise to Cozumel and Progreso. We are thinking about kids in 2-3 years so we want to travel more together before that. We love doing all kinds of things and are open to anything so if you were us and had around $10,000 (including airfare) where would you go? Or we could spend around $5,000 in August and $5,000 in May and rent a beach house in Destin, and invite our friends to come with us. What do you think? We have thought about Bahamas, Hawaii, Royal Carribean 7 day Mediterranean cruise, Italy, St. Lucia, we can't make a decision! Also, my husband is worried a week in Italy would be too much work, so therefore not relaxing. Could I plan it alone and it not be a lot of work? I know i have asked a lot of questions, I am an inexperienced traveler!! TIA!

Re: Help me with my vacation!
you could do either 1) 2 weeks in italy total or 2) one week on an island in the caribbean twice (or similar). Id really give 2 weeks for italy. you could easily do a week there in different cities and then do a cruise too. they go all over. i love doing both. our trip there in sept/oct 2008 was 3 nights in rome and a 12 night med cruise. in 2010 it was 4 nights florence, 7 in tuscany, 7 in sicily. my trip there 2 weeks ago was for a week and was just half rome and half florence. so i've done all kinds. and i've enjoyed them all for different reasons. one thing i LOVED about the cruise is that you dont ahve to pack and unpack. one thing i love about staying in a place for a few days is that you get to see a ton and explore more than if you just had a day or 2 (which isn't to say you can't do a lot in those days). really both have their pros and cons. you have to decide which is better for you.
honestly if i had to figure out how to spend half a vacation budget the last thing i'd do is rent a house in destin and then invite friends to visit. if anything rent it and have them help you pay for it so you can take another vacay too
Ok, along those lines...we are doing a big family trip this spring. To compromise on interests and balance sightseeing and relaxation, we decided on one week in Italy followed by a 7-night cruise. Of course you can't see all of Italy in a week - we chose to do Milan/the lake region for a few days, followed by a few days in Venice, with a Greek islands cruise roundtrip from Venice. If you're interested in this idea, I would start by researching cruises first and build the trip from there by adding time on in Italy based on where the cruise departs from.
There are many beautiful places to consider however you will chase your tail if you simply ask "where are the pretty places". First ask yourself, what is your daytime fantasy? What do you see yourself doing/experiencing? Then match the destination to your dream.
For example, do you imagine walking hand in hand strolling down the beach your husband? Then St. Lucia is out. St. Lucia is about beautiful lush green vistas, and hiking, Instead you may wish to consider Turks & Caicos. The sand there is some of the nicest in all of the Caribbean and the snorkeling/diving is only 2nd to Belize in the region.
Do you imagine being pool side during the day and getting dressed up at night checking out different dining venues. Consider Anguilla. It has one of the prettier beaches in the Caribbean and offers over 100 dining options (which is usually unheard of)
Air prices are sky high these days- so I highly suggest using frequent flyer points. Yours or begging your family for them ! It will put a dent in your budget.
Lastly, I strongly suggest when you are working with a 10K budget you use a well connected Virtuoso agent. You don't want to do it alone. You need to be reassured you are making the right decision and a Virtuoso agent can deliver value added amenities for free like free breakfast, special rates and upgrades.
