first timer to Vegas and Mandalay Bay
I've never been to Vegas before, what can you tell a first timer?
I know they have a ton of restaurants inside the hotel compound we're staying at, Mandalay Bay. But I can't seem to find a pricing list on their menus. Anybody have any info?
Also, who can tell me more about Mandalay Bay? What did you think of it, and is there anything I should know?
Re: first timer to Vegas and Mandalay Bay
When are you going? If you'll be there when the pools are open, I really liked the pool/beach at MB. It seemed a lot less crowded than other places down the strip, especially during the week. They also have a nice lazy river. It's no Rehab pool party, but at least you get fast drink service and some personal space. :-)
If you're into music, MB has the House of Blues. You might check to see if there's anyone you want to see while you're there. They also have the Shark Reef. It was pretty cool.
I don't know about where to find pricing lists for the restaurants, but if you have a few you know you want to eat at while you're there, I'd check restaurant.com for GCs before you go. They run good deals every so often, and I ended up getting several $50 GCs for $4 before I went last. I've been to Border Grill, MIX and Lupo and all were really good. I haven't gotten to try Stripsteak yet, but it's supposed to be really good. There's also Burger Bar right outside MB casino heading toward the Luxor. They have all sorts of burgers and really good alcoholic milk shakes.
For first time, I'd definitely make a point to walk as much of the strip as you can through the hotels. It's really interesting to see all the different themes in the hotels. Wear comfy shoes. You'll do a LOT of walking, and/or paying for cabs.
As a first timer I would spend lots of time walking the strip and going in to each of the hotels to check them out. I loved going inside to see each one's "gimmick"
If you are into food, Vegas is full of really amazing restaurants, but it can get pricey. We ate at Emeril's Delmonico Steakhouse (inside the Venetian) and I loved it, my H's favorite is Barolotta inside the Wynn. Just budget accordingly if you plan on eating at the nicer places. For prices, check trip advisor and see if anyone has given ranges.
The other thing I would recommend it you have time is checking out a show. We saw "O" when we were there and it was amazing!
My mother and I stayed at Mandalay Bay (The Hotel) in December - we had so much fun!
Many of the MB restaurants are on Restaurant.com, so we never paid full price for our meals there. We ate at Stripsteak (very yummy!), Raffles Cafe (pretty decent for breakfast, but nothing special), and Fleur (very fun with smaller plates, but the meat dishes were underwhelming - however, we loved the paprika popcorn and onion soup!).
This was my first time to Vegas, but I really enjoyed MB. The clientele seemed a bit more... sophisticated than other hotels we visited (Luxor, Excalibur, Flamingo, MGM Grand). It also has less foot traffic since it is at the end of the strip. But, that is probably the only con for us - it could sometimes be a pain to get anywhere, even though valet is free (except for tip).
Ditto
Some of my reviews:
mandalay bay
aureole -- mandalay bay
border grill -- mandalay bay
burger bar -- mandalay bay
fleur by hubert keller -- mandalay bay
house of blues foundation room -- mandalay bay
miX -- THEhotel
rm seafood -- mandalay bay
stripsteak -- mandalay bay
I've never stayed at Mandalay Bay but have been in it a few times, and it looked very nice!
As a first-timer, I would spend time exploring the strip and all the different hotels. They really are each different and unique with a different vibe to each. There is so much to see!
Do you enjoy shows? I would recommend a Cirque show. We saw LOVE and absolutely loved it! That one is at the Mirage; I know there are also others at different hotels.
The wax museum is fun and kind of silly. For something romantic, do a gondola ride at the Venetian, either inside or outside (we went in the winter and stayed indoors). We also saw a celeb impersonator show at the Stratosphere that was kind of fun (and we had a BOGO coupon). That's another suggestion-look online for coupons and deals! We found lots of them and I could print them for free (and they were legit because we used them successfully).
I love the MB, it's my favorite resort on the strip. THEhotel is my hotel of choice. Misoangry's reviews are spot on--we had amazing meals at Fleur (the lobster mac and cheese and almond panna cotta are out of this world), the Border Grill (the grilled portobello mushroom was incredible), and MiX. I think MB has the best collection of restaurants on the strip. And ditto the other posters-a lot of MB's restaurants run fantastic specials on restaurant.com. Here's a link to MB's dining tab, you can just click view menu, they also list the average check price on this page. http://www.mandalaybay.com/dining/signature-restaurants/mix.aspx
Ditto the rec for Cirque's LOVE, it's an amazing show.
