ADHD Clinic update

So we went to see Gibson's new doctor today and really liked him. There were a few really big concerns he has about Gibson, things I didn't really notice since he's been doing them since he was just a tiny little baby. One of which is facial ticks. We have to watch Gibson a little more closely and keep track of these ticks because the doc thinks he may have a slight case of tourettes. Another concern is the snoring, also something he's been doing since he was a newborn. We have to try and get him into a sleep study trial this doctor is going to be doing. He has a bit of a fast heart rate so he's going in for a scan tomorrow as well as getting his iron levels looked at. Gibson currently sits at the 3rd percentile on the growth chart and hasn't gained a single pound in the last year.
There was so much information today that it was almost overwhelming. This doctor will be seeing Gibson for the next 7-10 years. I'm relieved to know this isn't just going to be a quick fix. We concluded today that Gibson has ADHD (which we already knew, obviously), anxiety, depression, a growth problem (which I knew since he was 2 years old), and maybe sleep apnea as well. He is going to stop taking the ritalin and start taking a new medication that will last longer throughout the day but also it will be a lower dose so he isn't a total zombie anymore. I'm so happy to not have to give him ritalin anymore, it's been painful watching him during the day. He was completely stoned all day, a total zombie, then when it wears off it's like a light switch going off. He snaps, completely loses control, throws massive tantrums, fights, swears, throws things. It's like all the energy he's been storing away all day comes out as soon as the drug wears off.

That's all I've got for now, I don't really have much time to post more, and honestly, my brain still needs to go over everything that's been talked about today.  Thank you for all your support, it's nice to know that there are such wonderful women out there that care so much.

Have a good weekend!

  • {{hugs}}  I'm so glad you found a doctor willing to do such a thorough job, rather than just prescribing something and walking away.

  • Thank you all. I am still waiting for the pharmacy to call to say the new meds are ready, the doctor forgot to send me with triplicates for the prescription so we are just waiting for that to get sorted out then he will be on his way with a more suiting prescription. There is a lot going on for that poor little guy. Him and dad are having a bonding day today getting needles and seeing the doctor :( It's the first time I am not there for the needles, but they are both getting them so it should go smoothly. I like the boys' pediatrician, but he told me he doesn't know much about ADHD so I knew it was going to be a problem getting him on the right medication at first. He has been helfpful though, he referred me over to the new doctor and I'm thankful for that. It's only taken just over 6 years to finally find the right doctors. This has been a long, long ride trying to diagnose him properly and it's nice to know that I took all the right steps. I just hope that things are going to get better and this is really the best possible thing to do for Gibson.

  • Hope you get answers soon! Hang in there Donna.
