Do any of you have BC you love or BC you really hated and would never try again?
I can't believe I made it to 23 and married on just condoms. We were going to start ttc soon but now babies are NOT a plan for 3.5 years so BC it is! I figured the lovely ladies with bnotb would be the BC experts around here : )

Re: Birth Control
I've been on several different types of BC pills throughout the years. I've never had a problem with any of them except Natazia (gave me bad headaches). I'm currently on Beyaz and like it; I skip the placebos (doc's orders) and don't have a period at all now which is great. Loestrin 24, Ortho-cyclen, and Seasonique were fine too.
I've never experienced the side effects from BCP that some people have like feeling hormonal, weight gain, etc. That said, people's bodies handle things different so you may want to try one your doctor suggests and just see how you like it. You can always switch.
Many people are opting for IUDs these days also, and Mirena seems to be a common one on this board.
I went on the pill a month before my wedding (Nov 11) and it took awhile to get used to be everything is fine and dandy now. I love have lighter/shorter periods and noooooo cramps (I used to throw up it was so bad).
I'm on Tri Nessa, from Kroger, for $8/month.
The first month I was very hormonal but I honestly don't know if it was just the pill or the fact that I was stressed over the wedding... but everything is cool now and it's nice to not have to worry about getting KU anytime soon.
Light spotting is possible.. but on the up side, you don't have to do a thing for five years.
I just started the Nuva Ring a few months ago and I love it! I?m not gaining weight and it helped regulate my hormones, thus improving my mood. It?s a little awkward at first, but you get used to it and forget you have it in.
I hate Ortho anything because they all personally make me bleed more (even low dose). I?d stay away from Depo! I was on it for about a year and a half when it first came out. It was nice having no period or a really light one, but it made me mean and gain 30+ lbs. My doctor said she didn?t want to put me on the patch BC because of my complaint about weight gain with the Depo.
If you?re planning on having kids within 5 years, my doctor recommend to stay away from the Mirena and other similar BC. Mirena is a good choice after kids for some women. One of my friends swears by Mirena and another said it?s the worst BC she was ever on and she had to take it out. HTH Good luck finding a BC that works with your body.
I have been on BC pills for 8 years to treat PCOS. I was on some form of Yasmin, Yaz, Ocella, BeYaz (all basically the same thing) right up until last month. I was fine with those but I know that some women have had wicked side effects on them (and I personally had bad side effects on Ocella). It all depends on YOU personally as to what side effects you have.
I am currently on the generic of Seasonique (it's called Quasense) and it's like $15 for a 3-month supply. I haven't made it to my first period on it yet (it's one of the 4 periods a year pills) so I can't say how it bad that period is, but I know they say you might have spotting on it and I haven't yet.
My Blog
Why do some people not skip the placebos?
I'm just curious because every gynecologist I've had says it's ok to skip and there's no medical need for a period.
I have periods from hell though, so it's hard for me to grasp the idea of not skipping and enduring it.
I don't skip because I like the reassurance of a monthly period and my periods have been really easy since I went on the pill. Plus, the one time I tried to skip, I spotted non stop until I took the placebos and got a full period. A week of spotting and then a full period is worse than 4 days of full period.
Does anyone know anyone with a copper IUD? I've always wanted to try an IUD, but the side effects freak me out, especially since I've never had kids. And I've heard copper ones can make periods worse, but I want to get off the hormones eventually.
I have had Mirena for 3 years and love it! I've never had kids either. From what I understand the biggest thing about not having kids is that insertion can be a bit more painful. However, that was not the case for me at all. I only had minor cramping. The biggest issue for me was the spotting at the beginning (3ish months). But since that time, I've had very very short (1-2 day) and light periods every month.
I worked with a bunch of OB/MFMs and they all said it was their favorite (and one of the most preferred by OBGYN residents) as well.

I changed my name
I actually feel more confident in not getting KU when I skip the placebos, but I can see why it might be comforting for some to have a period.
This. Though I only do it every couple of months.
I am now on orthrotri and it's great. I was on the generic form and it did really weird things to me and I had some awful side affects. Now that I am on the namebrand, everything seems more consistent, and my period is far more normal.
I was also on Yaz for about 3 years, and it turned me into a completely crazy person. Good luck and talk to your dr.
I am in the same boat with having a small 1-2 day light period and prefer it that way. I am under the impression my body should naturally bleed, and I don't like the idea of not letting it happen at all for YEARS at a time. It leads to blood clotting for many women and I have known a woman to die from blood clots at the young age of 34 years old... she was on one of those "no period BC's". I just don't trust it, and it I think it is part of the reason that blood clots and heart disease are really on the rise for women under 40 (whereas these things were not as common 20+ years ago when these meds weren't available).
Just my opinion, though! I have no strong medical evidence that these BC's are going to lead to blood clots in every case, only that I know it can be a cause for some people.
Yikes! I've heard of some people being prone to blood clots while on BCP, but my docs have never mentioned skipping the placebos could be higher risk. I have a history of ovarian cysts and very bad periods (10+ days, nausea, cramps) so they always tell me skip every month. Anyway, thanks for the heads up. At my next annual I'll be sure to ask her about it.
I've been on deppo for years and I also love it. I have no symptoms, it's elminated my peroids, I had migraines on the pill, virtually none on deppo. I lost weight after getting my first shot (I made no change in excerise or diet). It's been wordenful for me.
Like a poster above I can only have progestrone based BC, so I'm limitted in my options. But deppo has been awesome.
