Is there such a thing as "bad" motivation?

I have been having a really hard time motivating myself lately. I spend more time making excuses as to why I don't work out than I ever thought imaginable. Yesterday the only reason I went to the gym was the fact that my boys were driving me crazy.

My original thought was that we needed to get out of the house to let them burn off some energy. Then I thought, "I don't even want to be around these kids right now, I wish I could hire a babysitter and go out and be alone. Any where, alone. I would give anything to just be alone!!".

Idea My gym membership!! Child care included! I had time to myself that was actually not wasteful, it was good for me, and my kids got to play and burn off energy. Why have I not been utilizing this? Why have I been letting myself be miserable, knowing that I needed a break from them and knowing I am unhappy in this body?? I'm not sure of the answer, but something finally clicked.

Is it bad that my motivation to work out is to get away from my kids?? I love them more than anything, but holy sh!t can they be a handfull!

  • I take my DD with me to the gym 6 days a week. It really makes a difference in my day to get my workout in and take a shower without interruption. Those 2 hours make me a better mom for the rest of the day.

  • I take my girls to the gym 4-5 days a week and I do my long runs alone. I love the time alone and relish it.

I'm planning on taking them the 5 weekdays. I asked yesterday how long I could keep them there, and was so happy when they said 2 hours.

DS1 goes to school 3 days a week, but the days they are both home have just become unbearable (sp?). I have such a short fuse with them those 2 days, and I was so beyond happy to go and run and clear my head!

The rest of the day was much better. I need to keep it up.

  • If that is a bad reason, than I am bad too.

I will also reward myself by doing my workout, then sitting in the locker room and reading a book or checking email/thenest for 15 minutes after I exercise.

Yay for escaping from heathen children!

  • I also don't see this as "bad" motivation.  It's completely healthy to need some time alone, I really don't see this as a problem.

Good for you. Enjoy every bit of those 2 hours. Honestly, it changes everything about my day, & that's motivation enough to get in there each day. As a SAHM, it's also nice to know that my dd is getting that social time every day. Now if only I could wean her & get some sleep ;););).

  • I think the only 'bad' motivation is if it's going to harm you - if you have an eating or exercise disorder and are compelled to exercise or similar.

But getting away from the kids? hell no, that's just plain smart! I'm there 5-7 times a week. and we only have childcare on weekdays at my gym :-) (to be fair, 2 evenings are thing1's swimming lessons, so thing2 gets parked in childcare).

  • No. It's fine and it's not "bad" motivation. You both experienced benefits from the experience.

Feeling like you absolutely needed to work out, and needed a break from your children--so you put them in crates at your house and left them?

    That is bad.

I am willing to bet that you will find that your fuse gets longer the more you take advantage of this.

Now that I'm SAH it has been a challenge finding time for myself.

The dreaded weaning. It's not easy is it? I hope that it starts getting easier for you : ) I will say that weaning has caused a huge dip in my appetite. I have just noticed it this past week I do not feel hungry, ever. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, but I hope that it means some weight will finally come off. I was constantly stuffing my face when nursing, it was like I couldn't get enough to eat.

A reduced appetite would be a woooonderful thing! I've been a very hungry nurser, too. My concern is that I've been so used to more calories for 2 years between pregnancy & nursing that I'll just habitually want to eat more after weaning.

My DH is in his heavy travel season right now, but when things slow down and I have more of his help, I think I'll be more aggressive with weaning. But what if I GAIN weight?! Lol, I'm way too nervous about this.

Ill get off my tangent now ;). Enjoy the gym! "You" time is so important, and there are not many things that are better to fill that time with.

  • I've dropped my kids off at the gym kidcare and just sat in the hot tub before.

so if you workout, you're better than I am Smile

  • Woah, if our gyms had free or inexpensive childcare, I'd be taking advantage of that as much as possible! And this is coming from someone who doesn't particularly like "gyms" since they make me feel like a caged hamster.

I do pay for it because it's included in the type of membership that I chose, but I haven't been utilizing it as much as I should : )
