PSA for those with sewing machines

Please remember to clean and oil your machine every once in a while.

I've never had a machine of my own and my Mom cleaned hers regularly and my MIL sends hers out for service so I never really thought about it.

Well after 1 year of 8 hours sewing/week my machine ground to a stuttering halt.  Luckily, I was able to go out and buy oil, i gave it a huge once over and it is now as good as new but I'm guessing none of this was really good for it.  So if you can't remember the last time you oiled your machine - I suggest you should do so. For it's own good.

Re: PSA for those with sewing machines

  • You are supposed to get it cleaned at least 1 time a year. If you are using it a lot every week I'd probably go every 1/2 year and get it cleaned.

  • And oil every 8-10 hours of sewing time!  At least for those of us with old machines.  My new machine says I can't oil it myself, nor does it tell me how often to oil it.  This worries me, but its been trucking along for a year.

  • That's a good PSA.  My book for my 1970s vintage brother recommends if you sew many hours at a time, oil once a day.  If you only sew less frequently, oil once a week.  My book for my mid 80s New Home says it never needs oiling. My sewing machine dude and I had a laugh over that one. :-)

  • Well, I will say you should check your machine (and maybe talk with your technician!) first. I'm pretty sure I would ruin my Pfaff if I tried to oil it like I oil my old Singer because of the parts it uses (at least that's what the dealer/mechanic told me). If I'm wrong, someone please let me know!

  • I have a very base model Kenmore which says to oil annually or more often if it is used frequently. Luckily it gives oiling instructions so I was confident enough to do that and it's operating well right now.  I'm planning on sending it in for servicing in a couple of months after I get through 2 wedding quilts.

I have a Pfaff, too. Mine needs to be oiled, but not that often and there is only one place to do it. I don?t know which model you have, and I?m guessing your?s is probably newer than mine. I understand that the more plastic parts they have, the less there is to oil. At elast that?s what the lady told me when I was looking at machines 11 years ago...
