Do you ever worry about the Norovirus on cruise ships?
I am thinking about booking a cruise with RC and then I came across a post on the cruisecritic message board and saw that people are saying there is an outbreak on one of their ships. It is not the one that I want to go but it go me thinking that it must suck if you are onboard when there is an outbreak.
What do you think about the norovirus and cruise ships? I know there can be an outbreak anywhere but would it make you think twice?
Re: Do you ever worry about the Norovirus on cruise ships?
Norovirus tends to be a January/February issue b/c of the clientele of passengers. There have been reports of a lot of older people not taking the precautions necessary and the virus is spreading on cruise critic. Or people being told to stay in their cabins and they aren't.
Since we don't usually travel during those time periods, we don't really worry about it. Plus I'm one to stick my hand under the hand sanitizer before going to the buffet just in case.

No the novo doesn't worry me when I travel. Noro can pop up on any ship, resort, school, etc. at any time. Our cruise to Alaska in August had a pretty bad outbreak. As long as you are smart about things you have nothing to worry about. Wash your hands often, use sanitizer before you touch any food, and be aware of who and what you are touching.
Most ships have great protocol that they are able to swing into action within seconds of hearing of an outbreak.
Could not agree with this more. Yes, there's always the potential something like this could happen on your cruise, but the odds are quite slim considering how many ships are at sea each year worldwide and are not affected by it.
Maui, November 2011
nope. i spent 4 days stuck in my girlfriends house in florida once with her, her husband and 3 kids who all came down with h1n1 the day before i arrived. you know how i didn't get it? i washed my hands, i didn't touch my hands to my mouth or eyes or nose, didn't share glasses etc.... there are purel dispensers EVERYWHERE ont he ships. that virus is also spread by touching and then putting your hands to mouth etc...
dont not go on a cruise because of it but wash your hands (i mean after everything, before eating, etc..) and dont worry. bring purel, use it, and you'll be fine.
And FWIW, the worst outbreak I've been through was in November, and another bad one was in June, so I wouldn't count on the time of year as being a preventative measure. Just wash your hands.
i don't worry about the norovirus, nor would it stop me from booking a cruise, but i am aware and conscious of it. i took a cruise with my dh and 6 other family members in a november. there was an outbreak on my ship and DH along with 3 others from our group got it. it was awful. thankfully i didn't get it even with DH puking & pooping in our tiny inside cabin room all night.
it did teach me that i will never ever not get a balcony. not being able to get any fresh air in the room was horrendous. luckily my mom was prepared with lysol, air spray and all sorts of stuff to help.
it also didn't deter DH from taking another cruise. but the next time we did get a balcony.
