We have set up a tank for fresh water fish and will be getting some Friday. Any reccomendations for hearty fish?
Re: Fishies!
I think the one fish you need the most is a plecostomus! They're the fish the stick to the side of the take and suck off the algae! There are also some really cool underwater/freshwater frogs, too!
Stay away from neons. They are my favorites, but I can't keep them alive.
My daughter pronounces it "ishies" and would love a tank at home, but instead she gets to see them at a local restaurant.
I can't either! Or the ones that "glow in the dark" or the "see through" fish. I heard once it is because they're genetically altered, don't know if that is true or not.
OH - also - to the OP, when you go to buy your fish, go to a place that has a "return" policy. Meaning, if the fish dies within a certain amount of time you can return it for a new one. The only down side is you have to bring the dead fish in as 'proof'...

There are also some really cool non-aggressive freshwater sharks. The store you go to (i would recommend a pet store) should have an employee to help you pick out which fish are ok to have together in a tank.
Good luck! Let us know what kind of fishies you get!
I've been thinking about getting a fish tank lately and was reading this website earlier this week - it has a good list of things to start with.
http://newaquariuminformation.com/aquarium-information/freshwater-aquariums/choosing-your-first-aquarium-fish.htm
This is what it says about sucker fish/bottom feeders:
Examples of tropical bottom feeding fish include Corydoras catfish, algae eating fish such as Plecostamus, Loaches, Crustaceans, Chinese Algae Eaters, Octocinclus and sharks. When setting up a new aquarium, avoid introducing bottom feeders until your tank is fully cycled and established, after about 2-4 months. Most species of catfish and algae eaters are sensitive to high ammonia and nitrite levels found in new aquariums. Also in new aquariums there is often very little for them to scavenge and no algae at all.
Thank you! I am so happy you told me!
