Outer Banks/NC Beach rentals ladies

Happy weekend, ladies....

I know that there are some ladies on the board who are familiar with/have rented homes in the Outer Banks/NC Beach areas in the past and was hoping to get some info - I get overwhelmed every time I look online to search for something but I'm hoping to find something for DH and I, my parents, and my sister, her DH and 7 y.o. son

Here's what we are looking for:

- On the beach or easy walking distance - we don't want to have to pack up cars and drive.

- 3+ bedrooms, pref 4 - possibly pet friendly but not required.

- NOT in the 4WD area.

- close driving distance to a couple of restaurants, bars, coffee shop, what have you....

Is there any realtor, specific area, etc, that anyone can suggest?  Is it totally unreasonable to hope that we can keep week under $5K in the summer?  Are there specific weeks that are better to go than others?

Thanks for any info you can share!

Re: Outer Banks/NC Beach rentals ladies

  • I'll be curious to watch this thread - I get totally overwhelmed as well when I look at Outer Banks rentals - thanks for posting this question.
Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.
  • We are going down this summer for a friends wedding. The bride is from nags head and recommended village realty. We are staying at the village of nags head abd it is on the beach side and seems close to things. Growing up we stayed in duck or ocracoke. Ocracoke is my favorite but the hardest to get to but it is awesome. I would be happy to send you the place we picked this year and places we have stayed in the past if you are interested.

  • Surf or Sound is a realty place we've used.  You should easily be able to find something in the high season for under $5k.  You can probably even get a pool, too.

Try Avon.  The Food Lion is there, which is super convenient.  A few restaurants, but the beach and houses are the main draw.  It's not touristy and crowded like Nags Head or Duck.  It's perfect for a week spent mainly at the beach and the house. Rodanthe/Waves/Salvo will widen your area a little, so they are worth considering.

It gets far less overwhelming if you pick an area, the week you want, then be specific and do an advanced search.  Once you are at your results, you probably can't go too wrong.  Just pick the one you like.

If you aren't sure about the week, then you can pick a less busy week just to get a view of all the properties, then find a house you like, and see when it's available.   The later in the summer, the harder it will be to find a place.  Then after Labor Day it's a breeze and way cheaper.  But with a 7 y.o. I'm guessing that's not an option.  Too bad, b/c the water is finally warm then.  It was a bummer when my first nephew got into school and we stopped going in Sept.

Keep in mind:  they protect the dunes there, so other than Rodanthe ( like the house from the movie), you won't find many houses in front of the dunes.  You'll still be shlepping your beach stuff over the dune if you stay ocean front.

Like any good super hero, I'm using my alter ego to protect my identity. Goodbye Silver poster status!
  • Thanks, ladies - this is a great start!

Victoria, I'd love to see the place you picked - can you PM the info when you have a chance?

And what I wouldn't GIVE to stay at that house in Rodanthe!!

I totally agree with this. You won't find activities (like mini golf or lots of shopping) on the Southern Shores, but you more than make up for it in an empty beach. (We go Labor Day week when it's less crowded though.)

We always stay a bit further south in Frisco. We've used Midgett Realty (which is limited to the Southern Shores). It isn't the 4WD area and is really close to Ocracoke for a fun day trip (ferry). The grocery store options are pretty limited (we bring a lottt of food with us and pack coolers) but we pick up milk, eggs, etc., at the cute general store, and you do pass Avon's Food Lion on the way down. There are a few good (non-chain) restaurants nearby, but it isn't a built-up area. The house we like is one lot back from the water. (The island is so narrow there that you're no more than about two lots back.) The only real shopping is a few galleries and some shops near the ferry. If you want more shopping, I'd rec a more populated area like Duck. We go to the beach though to do nothing but sit on the beach and eat/drink. We don't need much in the way of activities?maybe that wouldn't be enough for the 7-year-old. There are a few bars but nothing too commercial, if that makes sense. There's one cute coffee shop that I know of.

It isn't for everyone, but it depends on the type of vacation you're looking for.

I'd also be happy to PM you the name/link of the house we've stayed in before (we picked a new house this year just for a change of scenery). We only pick pet friendly and "ship shape"/no smoking. GL!

  • Last year we stayed in Corolla, in a community called the Currituck Club.  It was a little further north than the others mentioned, but not all the way up in the 4WD area.  It's really nice because you have access to all the amenities of the community (fitness center, pools, tennis courts, game room for the kids/teens), and one of the best amenities is the trolley to the beach and the beachside service.  every few blocks in has a little gazebo-type pick-up station and the trolley comes by every half hour or so and drives you about 2 miles or so to the beach.  When you get there, there's super nice, clean bathrooms, rentals for chairs, umbrellas, etc, and the staff will cart all your stuff out to the beach and back to the trolley for you at the end of the day.  It was great with a 2 1/2 year old and DH's grandfather who came along.
