FCF people - POLL included

so, apparently FCF (Full Circle Farm for people who don't know) isn't CSA anymore?  Some friends who were getting it say they have switched to Pacific Coast Harvest (I'm going to be doing some more research this week) because FCF isn't really local anymore.  I did notice that they have started importing more things, but was wondering if you guys had any thoughts.

Honestly, for us it's really just been a good way to make sure we eat lots of fruits and veggies.  It's a plus that it's all organic and great that we've been able to support local farms, but not (for me) a primary concern.  But I guess now I'm wondering a) should I try to choose items for my box that are local or b) consider switching to a company that really focuses on WA farms if not only ones in the surrounding states.  Thoughts?

PS my friends say the ones from Pacific Coast Harvest come in a crate with a burlap sac, which looks cool, but they also reuse them instead of the cardboard that FCF uses.

Re: FCF people - POLL included

  • I agree with your friends, and it's the reason why we didn't go with FCF for "CSA," and instead buy from our farmer's market (the Capitol Hill one actually has a good selection of local farmers) and our co-op (I chat with the folks there to find out what's within 20 miles that week).

yeah, I just don't have time to do that :-/  There isn't a farmer's market in our neighborhood (there are several near us, just not close enough that it wouldn't feel like a whole separate trip to the grocery store).

  • I've had concerns about the growing number of imported items that are in my default box. I go in every week and swap out imported produce for something more local. (Except for the oh so delicious mushrooms that are from BC)

We only have farmer's markets on the Eastside during the summer months... May-October I think? We suspended our FCF membership for the farmer's market months last year, and will very likely do the same this year. The markets are cheaper and the selection of produce that's actually local is much larger.

If this keeps up though, I may be looking into other options for a produce box. If we're going to pay for local and organic, I'd like it to be local and organic.

I vote for finding a new place, but I'll do some asking around to find out what the best options are. General region for delivery/pick-up?

thanks!  I'm in North Seattle :)

  • I'm sticking with FCF and I'll buy from local farmer's markets and gardens. As long as I've had FC, they've included things from other places. There is no way that you can get the best of everything from WA. Coconut trees do not grow anywhere on the contiguous US. Lots of sweet, delicious fruit is grown elsewhere. I love WA apples and carrots. Spices grow well here. Citrus fruit, melons, and many other edibles do not. We don't have enough sunshine and heat for some things to survive. I've never had a sweeter kiwi than those from FC. I usually add onto my order with their green grocery. They have a good variety of things from WA businesses.

I love going to local farmer's markets. It's great to support local business. If I relied on that, I would be eating bouquets more than fruit.
