Garmin 305 or 405?

Total newbie to the Garmin scene, but I am wondering which to get.  I want a HR monitor, and a GPS, ect.  But, do I need to plunk down the cash for the newest version?  I feel like the reviews are all over the place!  What do you guys think??  TIA!

Re: Garmin 305 or 405?

  • I have the 305 and really like it. I like the large display. However, I will tell you that I think it is a little less accurate than the newer models. I ran with a friend who has the 410 (I think). We ran about 13 miles together the whole way. The 2 Garmins showed a difference of about a quarter mile by the end with the 305 overestimating the distance. It could have been the particular route we ran (sort of in a valley/hilly area). I noticed that the map of my route was not close to the path/road we ran on, so I am inclined to think the 410 was more accurate. This is probably not a huge deal, but it's something I've never seen mentioned elsewhere.

  • The 305 is the only Garmin I've ever had, so I can't compare... but I do know that the reviews on the 405 were bad, so if you like that model, make sure you get the 405cx. It's an improved version of the 405.

  • I have the 405CX and love it.  The touch dial can be a bit fiddly but it's no big deal to just lock the bezzle when I'm running.
  • I got the 405 for Christmas and love it.  It's only dropped me once and it was a cloudy day when I was running under lots of trees.  The accuracy is really good as well.  It matched the distance when I ran a race a few weeks ago and it matches my running companion's 405cx when we run together.

  • I have the 305 and really like it.

I've never had any issues. It gets a little slack because it has a big screen but I actually see that as a pro - it can show a lot of different data at once.

  • I have the 305. It's clunky but I like it.

I agree with this. I adore my 305 and the screen is a huge plus for me. I've never found it to be too clunky because I love the perks of easily seeing my workout stats.
