BWLO: Sick Kids

Does anybody else have a DH who freaks out whenever your LO gets sick?  Or maybe you freak out?

Benjamin is definitely sick.  He has had diarrhea since Thursday, Saturday night he was vomiting (we went to the Dr then), and then yesterday he started running a fever.  Now, admittedly, I am concerned and he has a Dr appt for this morning.  However DH freaks.....as in he wanted to call out of work and take B to the ER.  His fever is kind of high (102.8), but he is acting mostly normal (more clingy) and eating okay. Does DH freak or am I too laid back?

Re: BWLO: Sick Kids

  • Eh, you gotta go with your gut.  I think it's probably good to have a balance (one parent 'freaking" one parent laid back).  That way you balance each other out and probably end up doing the right thing.

In our house, DH doesn't freak.  I am the more concerned one normally and he's always telling me that things are normal and then I kindly remind him he's not a Pediatrician and to be a Dad and not a Doctor, etc.  THing is, he's always been right.

  • I am very laid back, but instead of freaking out, H just takes his cues from me. That's hard too, since it's more like I'm the only parent and he just goes with whatever I say as being correct. I have no idea either, but he seems to think I know best.
  • I am more of the alarmist than DH.  DH was home all day with C during the week after Christmas, knew he had a fever and did nothing.  I got home, checked and it was 102+ so I rushed him to the doctor's office at 8 pm.  If they doctor couldn't have seen me, I wouldn't have gone to the ER though.

And I have been itching to take LO to the doctor regarding his eczema, but DH thinks it is no big deal and we should just keep putting more lotion on him.

  • It's all situational for us, but I think we're both pretty much on the same page.  When Sawyer had RSV, we were up in the middle of the night with him & a 104 degree fever, and we were both pretty level headed about it even though it was scary.  We were able to get his temperature back down to 102, so we decided to wait to take him to his regular pedi in the morning.

On the other hand, Sawyer burnt his hand last week, and DH left to go somewhere before we realized how much of his hand he actually burnt (long story), and when I checked it and saw it had a blister on it, I did freak out.  We went to the ER where they wrapped it and gave us some pain meds, but by later that night, he was back to normal, the burn looked way better, and he never even needed the pain medicine (other than the dose they gave him in the ER).  I probably overreacted and wasted a lot of time & money, but I always feel like it's better safe than sorry.  You just have to go with your gut.

  • DH freaks out more than I do, but he's never been around kids much either. I agree with pp that going with your gut always seems to be the best solution.
